History and community have always been key elements of life in the historic riverfront port of Kinsale, where in 1977, three young Kinsale natives -- architect Harry Lee Arnest and historians Frank Bailey Jr., and Walter B. Norris Jr. -- spearheaded the creation of the Kinsale Foundation. They were joined by other area businessmen and historians like Earl Carter Moss of Moss Chevrolet, Edna Sanfor

d Douglas, the Bevanses of Bevans Oyster Co. and the Cardens of Potomac Supply in forming Kinsale Foundation. They envisioned a group that would welcome newcomers to the historic village and unite in protecting Kinsale’s environment -- both cultural and physical. In the ensuing years, the foundation has bought property for public use, as well as collecting and safe-guarding documentation on local history. The Foundation co-hosts holiday gatherings with Cople District Volunteer Fire Department. The Museum building (which at various times housed a tavern, a butcher shop, and many other businesses) was given to the Foundation by Arnest's widow in 1989. After extensive restoration, Kinsale Museum opened to the public in 1993. The two work hand in hand to promote preservation of Kinsale, which became a historic district in 2005.

the case of the lost bivalve float has been solved. Asa found it, towed it to Sloop Point, and Don Polifka has been reunited with his bivalves!

04/03/2026

Don Polifka would like to hear if you or a friend or neighbor may have found a Taylor oyster float which seems to have come loose from its moorings on Kinsale Creek at their Plainview Road dock.
Its companion floats are still in place, but this one has taken a hike!
its four ropes are gone except for nubs.
this is a real loss, as the oysters are five years old and ready to eat and were slated for Good Friday dinner.

Be here – in spirit or in person - to make a difference with loving kindness
This very special event held annually on the first Saturday in Dec. YOUR HELP IS VITAL! We can’t do it without YOU, Kinsale Friends! Invite relatives, friends & neighbors to participate. Even if y’all can’t be here on the day itself, you can pre-bid on auction items, bake cookies, donate freely, and share the love!

Families & friends of angels on the tree invited to join hands around the tree in a scene filled with love and light. Thanks in advance to Turner Waughtel for finding a great tree and to generous Kinsale Friends for decorating the Gazebo area.
FLASHBACK TO LAST YEAR: Christmas in Kinsale 2024 saw a glorious outpouring of love despite chilly weather
Masonic breakfast lent everyone strength for the cloudy, then rainy and rather chilly day. The Masons donated so generously!
After taking in $21,809, we deducted $2,764 in expenses, escrowed $2,000 for 2025, then donated $4,203 each to 4 area charities.
Multiple musicians wove a skein of melodies, area homes were decorated fit to beat the band. CDVFD’s generously donated bikes and parade were well received, as was the delicious festive feast they sold.
Thank YOU so much for the huge, heart-warming heaps of beautiful coverlets, handmade quilts, spreads, shawls, hand-knitted items, sweaters, jackets, towels, warm clothes, hats, linens, food, gift cards and more which you so kindly gave. These were channeled through the Museum to the Haven, to senior citizens, and kids.
Your donations in memorial lights, for the mules, and other special moments were key to funding this special day. Leslie Davis’s mesmerizing mules Ike and Mike clippety-clopped despite the rain, starring in the parade and charming kids and seniors alike.
Todd Ransone’s totally transcendent toybox received huge numbers of compliments and raised $1,550 in raffle money. Vividly vivacious vendors helped folks fill their Christmas lists. There were around 140 angels on the memorial tree.
Captivating creative cookies were truly outstanding. MANY folks gave WONDERFUL donations in lieu of baking.
The silent auction netted $7,400. Cople District Volunteer Fire Department Cople District Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary The Slips // Kinsale Northern Neck National Heritage Area

CHRISTMAS IN KINSALE notes continue

THE KIDS ZONE AND SANTA, with children and venerable volunteers, are still going to be TOASTY WARM INSIDE the RIGHTHAND bay of Kinsale firehouse during Christmas in Kinsale, from about 11 to about 3. YES, INSIDE the RIGHTHAND BAY as for the past several years.

It is just the LEFTHAND bay of the Firehouse that is off limits for the event... so as to shelter the firetrucks from having their pumps frozen, thereby SENDING ALL VENDORS TO THE PARK.

This has just been confirmed Wednesday evening by your Museum Director with both Todd Padgett and Tommy Lewis. I am just as sorry as can be if my earlier post sparked confusion on this topic. ### lynn norris
