During Knik’s boom period, George W. Palmer replaced his original G.W. Palmer Merchandise store with a larger one (highlighted below) in 1914. He continued operating the business even after most people left the townsite for Wasilla. Around 3 a.m. on May 16th, 1918, a connecting stockroom caught fire, which quickly spread to Palmer’s store and warehouses. Eleven structures in all were lost. He spoke of rebuilding them but never did.

George W. Palmer established the original G.W. Palmer General Merchandise store in Knik at the turn of the 20th century. He supplied it with items purchased from the Alaska Commercial Company, which was under his management when the business closed and withdrew from the area. Palmer’s store doubled as Knik’s unofficial post office until he was appointed Postmaster on October 29th, 1904. The building was replaced by a larger structure in 1914.

A full edition of the Sunny Knik News dated August 1917. This paper was published by Orville George Herning, his wife, Mattie, and son, George (a.k.a. Stanley). At the time, they were running the original Knik Trading Co. in Knik and the new Knik Trading Co. in Wasilla simultaneously.
