The bone structure that connects our skull to our cervical vertebrae is called the occipital condyle. In a Triceratops the structure is a ball and socket like a swivel trailer hitch. The ball is attached to the rear of their brain case, and the socket is a cup like structure on their first cervical vertebrae. Their entire brain case is over a foot long and has over 14 different openings for various nerve bundles.
At one of my favorite dig sites I uncovered a Triceratops occipital condyle with a portion of the brain case. I recently completed prepping this fossil and it is now on display at the Prairie Fossil Museum.
