quare Garden, members of the Barnum & Bailey Circus gathered to form the Circus Women’s Equal Rights Society.

Long before society at large granted women financial independence or political rights, female circus stars were already living as equals. They ran their own acts, commanded massive salaries, and toured the country as living proof that women possessed immense strength, courage, and capability.

When national suffrage leaders saw these performers defying gravity and societal expectations under the big top, they recognized them as natural allies in the fight for the vote.

Long before the law recognized women as equal, circus performers were living it out loud. 💪✨

From running their own acts to out earning men, these trailblazers became the ultimate proof that women were strong enough to change history. When the suffrage movement joined forces with the big top, the results were iconic.

The fight for the ballot wasn't a straight line, and it certainly wasn't shared equally. 📜✨

While prominent Southern organizer Kate Gordon fought for women's voting rights, she actively opposed the 19th Amendment to protect state-level exclusions aimed at keeping Black women from the polls. But Black suffragists and organizers refused to stand down. They built independent coalitions, organized relentlessly, and continued the fight for full voting rights long after 1920.

History demands that we tell the whole story.

As a practicing physician, suffragist, and experienced mountaineer, she led an expedition to the summit of Mount Rainier (14,411 feet). Upon reaching the top, she planted an iron staff into the ice to fly a "Votes for Women" banner visible for miles around.

Her courageous action brought national attention to the suffrage movement and demonstrated the strength, resilience, and determination of women fighting for their fundamental rights.
