Opening in 2028 in downtown historic Gay Street, Knoxville, Tennessee, the Women’s Suffrage Museum will be a landmark dedicated to preserving the legacy of the suffragists and celebrating Tennessee’s pivotal role as the “Perfect 36.”

The original queen of the political clapback. 👑✨
This iconic illustration, The Awakening, came to symbolize a nation breaking free from old limitations. But the powerful poetry driving that message forward belonged to one brilliant mastermind: Alice Duer Miller.

Alice was an elite intellectual who realized that anger wasn't her only option—humor was far more lethal. She launched a wildly popular satire campaign titled "Are Women People?", directly quoting anti-equality politicians and using their own backwards logic to make them a public laughingstock. From mocking arguments about fashion to exposing political hypocrisy, Alice proved that a sharp wit could open doors that anger alone couldn't budge.

Intertwined over her heart. 💛🤍🪻

Long before the 19th Amendment made history, Mary Wilson McTeer was breaking ground right here in East Tennessee. In 1875, she shattered barriers as the first woman to earn a bachelor's degree from a college in the entire state, graduating from Maryville College.
She went on to build and lead the Maryville Equal Suffrage League in 1893—only the second local suffrage club established in Tennessee. Though she tragically passed away from illness at just 45 years old, her final wish was to be buried with the yellow and white ribbons of the movement resting over her heart.

She didn't live to see the final victory, but she laid the stones we stand on today.

Juno Frankie Pierce didn’t wait for an invitation to change Tennessee history—she brought her own chair.

She stood before an all-white suffrage convention in 1920, fought for the voting rights of Black women, and left a legacy of fierce civic action.

They tried to break Lucy Burns. They failed. ⛓️✊

In 1917, inside the cold walls of the Occoquan Workhouse, guards tried to break her resolve—handcuffing her to cell bars through a freezing night and subjecting her to unimaginable cruelty during the infamous "Night of Terror." She endured the unthinkable so that we could have a voice.
