From James F. L. Carroll, Founder & Director
New Arts Program
As of June 30, 2024, the New Arts Program will cease to exist, but its history will not be lost. Two major repositories will hold its legacy: the Archives of American Arts, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., and Martin Art Gallery, Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa.
The Archives of American Art is the new home of materials related to the process involved in the creation, programming and operation of the New Arts Program. Included are correspondence, NAP produced catalogs, other media, and archival materials, documenting the hundreds of artists who have participated during the past fifty years. Josh Franco, Head Curator, and his team are digitizing the donation currently. Soon the New Arts Program materials will be available to the public both in person or on-line.
Dr. Jessica Ambler, Director of Martin Art Gallery, Muhlenberg College, recently acknowledged the donation of works from the New Arts Program collection. The donation has been designated by Muhlenberg College as Gift of the New Arts Program Under the Leadership of James F. L. Carroll. The collection includes over one hundred prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures, artist books, posters, and archival materials. A complete cataloguing of artists and materials is underway.
As of July 1, 2024, the James Carroll Studio will be located at
