In a little over a year, the new Wisconsin History Center’s retail space will open! Artists and makers - here’s the info for partnering up. The exhibits, media productions, and retail spaces will share stories from every region of the place we now call Wisconsin. Please share!

Are you a Wisconsin artist or maker? We would love to see your work!

Opening in late 2027 on Wisconsin’s Capitol Square in Madison, the Wisconsin Historical Society’s new flagship building, the Wisconsin History Center, will take a modern approach to sharing our state’s history and connecting communities.

The first-floor retail store will extend those stories beyond the galleries, offering visitors and the public a unique selection of merchandise inspired by Wisconsin’s people, places, and history. The store will feature custom-made products alongside consignment, wholesale, and collaborative work from artists and makers across the state.

The stories shared at the Wisconsin History Center and throughout Wisconsin are shaped by the communities that have made an impact on our state. We want our retail space to reflect that influence and celebrate the creativity found in communities across Wisconsin.

We’re inviting Wisconsin artists and makers to help us bring those stories to life. Through this open call, we’re seeking original artwork, products, and merchandise that celebrate the people, places, cultures, and stories that make Wisconsin unique.

That’s a wrap on our 2026 season!

Thank you for such a great season! It was a pleasure reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new guests experiencing the majesty of the island for the first time. Thank you for making us a stop on your island adventures and we look forward to seeing you next season!

Today, September 30, we remember and honor the 1854 Treaty of La Pointe. The Madeline Island Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm. A full schedule of Treaty Day activities organized by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is included below. Miigwech.

Aaniin! The Madeline Island Museum will be open Wednesday, September 30 from 10 am to 4 pm. There are many meaningful events planned throughout the day on Mooningwanekaaning to commemorate the 1854 Treaty at La Pointe. Stop in for a visit and reconnect with the “Passages: Ojibwe Migration to the Place Where Food Grows on the Water” exhibit.

We look forward to seeing everyone throughout the day - free admission is offered and a reminder that walk-on ferry tickets are complimentary on September 30. The Wisconsin Historical Society is honored that the wiigwaasi jiimaan (birchbark canoe) built by Red Cliff Ojibwe Elder Marvin DeFoe will begin its journey to Madison on Treaty Day, where it will be displayed at the new Wisconsin History Center, opening in 2028.

You won’t want to miss the last Wednesday evening program for the 2026 season! Ojibwe Culture and Flute Music: An Evening with Anishinaabe Musician and Storyteller Laughing Fox at 7 pm on September 2.

Join us to enjoy an evening of music and storytelling with Michael Laughing Fox Charette, a gifted Native American storyteller, poet, and member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior. As a self-taught Native American flute player, he enhances his stories with hauntingly beautiful flute music. Growing up surrounded by the pristine beauty of the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior led him to dedicate his gifts as an artist to educating about Native American history, culture, and ways of life. Laughing Fox’s work as both a visual and performance artist is varied and tied together by the traditional teachings of the Anishinaabe people, which is respectfully incorporated into his work.

Laughing Fox captivates audiences of all ages with his authentic, relaxed style.
