It's Indigenous People's Day today!! Formally known as Columbus Day. But, their ancestors knew this land existed hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus came calling.
There were Native Ceremonies, Native inspired foods to taste, stories being told and powwow style dancing! The drum was being beaten and the dancers whirling around in their Jingle Skirts. The young men wore bells and beaver skin hats, breeches and with war clubs in hand, they moved to each beat of the drum. The girls danced the side step and the shawl dance. Each part was explained. Each part of their elegant and colorful clothing was explained before the dance began.
Thank you to all the dancers Lac Courte Oreilles tribe, Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University, and the members of Rusk County Historical Society for bringing us such a treat to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.
This afternoon the Geodesic Dome (home to a wonderful display of Indian Artifacts) is open along with the Welcome building. There is plenty still going on. A member of the group will be teaching beadwork. Come on down and learn about our Indigenous friends and neighbors.
