Today is National Fossil Day! It's celebrated each year to highlight the scientific and educational value of paleontology and to promote the preservation of fossil resources. Visit us today at UL Lafayette Science Museum to see exhibits including fossils discovered here right here in Acadiana as well as other locations in Louisiana and beyond. The museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 1-6pm.

Here are 20 ways to celebrate from the National Park Service. Some of our favorites include a downloadable Junior Paleontologist Activity Book and a downloadable Prehistoric Life coloring book.

This Saturday, September 12 from 10am to 1:30pm is STEM Saturday: The Cajun Prairie at UL Lafayette Science Museum in Downtown Lafayette. Explore the natural history, soil, flora and fauna that defines the coastal prairie ecosystem in Acadiana. Examine insect, grass and soil specimens and information with biologist and educator Dr. Phyllis Baudoin Griffard. There also will be a screening of short documentary, Louisiana Grass Roots, directed by Jillian Godshall and produced by Dr. Griffard.

STEM Saturday activities are included with regular museum admission and are made possible by a grant from Halliburton. Activities are open-ended allowing visitors to come and go while touring exhibits and the planetarium.

Join us Saturday, September 12 from 10am-1:30pm for STEM Saturday: The Cajun Prairie, sponsored by a grant from Halliburton. Learn about the natural history of our region's tallgrass coastal prairie ecosystem and the soil, flora and fauna that once comprised an area of 2.5 million acres called the Cajun Prairie. Examine insect, grass and soil specimens and information with biologist and educator Dr. Phyllis Baudoin Griffard. The accompanying short documentary, Louisiana Grass Roots, directed by Gillian Godshall and produced by Dr. Griffard will be shown in the museum's auditorium during this time.

STEM Saturday activities are included with regular museum admission. Activities are open-ended allowing visitors to come and go while touring exhibits and the planetarium. Best for elementary and middle school ages, but older kids and adults can have fun learning something new or helping younger children.

We are excited to share this new opportunity from the UL Lafayette Physics Department - Physics Advantage 2026, a Physics Enrichment Program for kids and teens guided by UL physics faculty and students. Twelve sessions begin September 10 and 11 and run through December 3 and 4 with sessions held on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Today is the final day of our annual Planetarium Marathon 2026 with five shows at 11am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm and tomorrow is STEM Saturday: Our Sun from 10am-1:30pm. All planetarium shows and STEM Saturday activities are included with regular museum admission. Join us for these events that are sure to be out of this world!
