In preparation for Endangered Species Day with U.S. Fish and Wildlife this Saturday, May 16 from 10am to 1:30pm, check out this video from WAFB about the red-cockaded woodpecker. Join us to learn more about Louisiana wildlife conservation success stories made possible by the Endangered Species Act, which was passed in 1973 to establish protections for fish, wildlife and plants listed as threatened or endangered and plan for their recovery.

Red-cockaded woodpeckers makes their homes in mature pine forests. While other woodpeckers bore out cavities in dead trees where the wood is rotten and soft, the red-cockaded woodpecker is the only one which excavates cavities that are exclusively in living pine trees, making mature longleaf pine forests like those in Louisiana's Kisatchie National Forest ideal habitat for these small birds.

We turn off the highway and drive a couple of miles on a gravel road through the tall longleaf pines of Louisiana’s Kisatchie National Forest.

We had a fantastic opening weekend for our new exhibit “Born to Bite: How Teeth Reveal Diet.” This exhibit was designed and built by UL students in GEOL 422: Museum Techniques. Using 3D printed fossil replicas, the exhibit explores the differences in mammal teeth and what they can tell us about what the animal eats. Check it out for yourself. Visit UL Lafayette Science Museum, open Wednesday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! A new exhibit opens tomorrow, Friday, May 1, 2026, at UL Lafayette Science Museum in Downtown Lafayette.

The exhibit, "Built to Bite: How Teeth Reveal Diet," was was conceived, designed and built from the ground up by a team of University of Louisiana at Lafayette geology students over the course of three months. Using 3-D printed teeth models, the exhibit invites visitors to examine size and shape clues to determine what different animals ate demonstrating how a single fossil can tell a powerful story. We’re grinding out plaques for this new exhibit. She’s the molar opposite of boring. It is almost time for the debut of “Born to Bite”! You can see the students polishing up bones. 🦴🦷😁

Save the date: Exhibit officially opens on May 1, 2026. The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
