This week we said a heartfelt goodbye to two of our beloved long-standing docents, Sylvan and Geneva. Geneva brought a sunny, artistic spirit to the museum and Sylvan shared his wonderful creative talents with all of us. Their presence has truly shaped the magic of our place.

They’ve each left their mark on our Tree of Make Believe by signing their names. Pieces of their creativity will continue to live on in our gift shop through their handmade ceramics, stickers, and postcards. When you pick up one of their items, it will continue to support them in their creative ventures.

We are so grateful for everything they’ve given and wish them all the best as they step into their next adventures. This isn’t goodbye—it’s simply “see you again.” We know our paths will cross at the museum again someday!

Installation on a new art installation began this week at the Museum of Make Believe…

A sandcastle tucked inside a treasure chest will soon wash ashore at the edge of our forest—carrying with it the story of a fairy named Ivella and the Daydream Lagoon.

Some of you may remember when this began as a small, secret project—dreamed up by our docent Shree Suvarna for our themed restroom, “Admiral Sky’s Water Closet.” It was meant to be a hidden surprise beneath the sink, brought to life by Shree, Geoff Mitchell, and fellow docent Sylvan Romero.

But as the piece grew, so did its story… and we knew it belonged somewhere more magical—out in the forest, where the ocean meets imagination.

Now, it rests inside a beautifully nostalgic treasure chest, designed and built by scenic artist Bill Schaffell, ready to be discovered as part of your journey.

Two years ago on April 26th, 2024, our little band of artists here in Southern California opened Museum of Make Believe in Laguna Beach to the public.

It’s a charming one thousand square foot immersive storybook forest filled with art, stories and much more. We like to think of it as a “preview of what is to come” …. and yet, even at this small scale, we’ve had 26,000 guests visit …. which is really quite a turnout! We’ve enjoyed greeting each and every one and can’t wait to welcome many more as we grow and build into the future!

If you haven’t visited us yet, please consider it ….You can find the ticket link here: https://feverup.com/m/160158

We’ve been incredibly grateful for the wave of press since opening in April 2024—from features in the LA Times, Orange County Register, Chicago Tribune, and beyond.

Most recently, we were honored to be included in The New York Times article, “Make This Year’s Spring Break a Great Escape,” spotlighting Laguna Beach, California and its vibrant arts scene.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped bring our storybook forest to life—you’re the magic behind it all!

Recently we’ve had a number of guests from Illinois tell us they had seen us on the front page of the travel section of the Chicago Tribune. And one day a guest even brought in a copy for us!

Originally written by Todd Martens, columnist on theme parks and immersive experiences for the Los Angeles Times, the article, “Fantasy Forest Sprung To Life”, syndicated and has appeared in papers such as The Virginian Pilot in Newport News, The Morning Call in Allentown PA, along with others in Florida, South Carolina and Michigan.

Museum of Make Believe was recently named by Locale Magazine as one of the “15 Places in OC to Take Your Cool Friend From LA” - and we love what they’ve written about us!

“When your LA friend claims OC lacks culture, this is where you take them. The Museum of Make Believe feels like stepping into a dream built by Laguna Beach’s most imaginative minds. The gallery merges storytelling, fine art and fantasy to create immersive installations you won’t soon forget. Every corner glows with whimsy, and the experience feels intimate and theatrical. Wander through shadow boxes, diorama worlds and hand-crafted scenes that blur the line between memory and illusion. It’s the kind of art adventure that sparks long conversations at dinner and inspires new Orange County itinerary ideas.”
