Santa Fe–based painter Jennifer Bain's distinctive practice centers on the beauty, symbolism, and expressive presence of birds.

Her newest paintings debut in EVENING CALLS opening April 2.

Bain's luminous compositions move seamlessly between representation and abstraction. Her subject matter? Birds. Appearing as both natural subjects and symbolic figures, she places them among layered bands of color in fields of hard-edge abstractions, or flowing and translucent botanical formations.

Bain grew up in New York City and was educated at California College of the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her prolific experimentation with color, anatomy, texture, compositional structure, and visual perception have guided her numerous discoveries through multiple bodies of work over several decades.

For Bain, the creative process culminates in a sense of internal and external awareness. “Painting explores ideas based on looking somewhere outside of ourselves… the idea of wholeness and connectivity informs the themes in my work.”

Introducing Evening Calls, a new exhibition of paintings by Jennifer Bain, opening Thursday April 2 at Skidmore Contemporary Art in Laguna Beach. See link in bio!

In this newest body of work, Bain explores the lyrical rhythms of the natural world through her signature imagery of birds. Perched, calling, or quietly observing, her subjects appear within vibrant fields of color or among expressive botanical forms, suggesting moments of communication and contemplation.

Known for her distinctive balance between traditional naturalism and contemporary abstraction, Bain situates her birds within structured bands of color or fluid ink environments, creating compositions that feel both dynamic and meditative.

We hope you'll join us for a special reception with the artist during the to celebrate the opening of Evening Calls!

Skidmore Contemporary Art is pleased to present an exhibition of work by Caroline Gray, a California‑based photographer who uses her camera with a painter’s sensitivity to composition, color, light, and the emotional sensations they invoke.

Dancing Deeply, Dream showcases Gray’s keen affinity for light and the fluidity of form while exploring the theme of underwater dancers. She states, “I am transfixed by the sensuousness of the human body in water, and revealing the beauty of humanity alongside the vastness of the natural world.”

A striking series of fluid motion and ethereal elegance, Dancing Deeply, Dream captures suspended moments beneath the water’s surface, where gravity loosens its grip and gesture becomes pure expression. The photographs feature graceful figures in flowing poses, and partially mirrored on the undulating waterline plane above. Gray’s images suggest an abstract, painterly quality akin to the dreamlike aesthetic of midcentury photographers such as André Kertész and Toni Frissell, or contemporary visual artists like Christy Lee Rogers.

Gray’s has shown widely in solo and group exhibitions in Santa Monica, Malibu, 29 Palms, and Topanga, California as well as in Whitstable, United Kingdom. Her photography has appeared in the Los Angeles Times and on the cover of Den Norske Israelsmisjo, among other publications.
