A real Mardi Gras krewe captain in Southwest Louisiana is part leader, part referee, part therapist, and part miracle worker. They’re the ones keeping the floats rolling, the traditions alive, and the whole krewe together when things get a little sideways.

This new exhibit in the Museum pays homage to the dozens of captains that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of their krewe.

Joe Lanza's animatronic is one of the first that greets you in the brand new Mardi Gras Museum, located at 701 Enterprise Boulevard in Lake Charles. Joe was a charter member of Krewe de la Famille and served as President of the Board of Directors for 22 years. He also was the Krewe's first honoree of the President's Award for Outstanding Service. In addition to his dedication to the Krewe, he served as President and on the Board of Directors of Mardi Gras of Imperial Calcasieu for several years. He helped organize the Mardi Gras Museum and also served on its board of directors. As recognition of his service to Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras, he was named Grand Marshall of the Lake Charles Merchant's Parade in 1993. We take immense pride in carrying on Joe's memory.

We're open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 5pm. We can't wait to see you!

Only in Lake Charles can Mardi Gras history come with a little bark and a lot of personality.

The animatronic dogs at the Mardi Gras Museum don’t just sit still, they tell the story of the Krewe of Barkus parade. Thank you to Rick and Donna Richard for their support of the Museum (and Golden Retrievers). :)

Check out this national article about the brand new Mardi Gras Museum in Lake Charles!

"Step inside the reimagined Mardi Gras Museum and you’re swept into a bold, immersive celebration of Southwest Louisiana’s Carnival spirit, anchored by the world’s largest display of Mardi Gras costumes. Southwest Louisiana has always known how to celebrate, and Lake Charles is no exception. I experienced my first Mardi Gras in this gem of a city, and I loved every minute of it. Unlike the louder party atmosphere associated with New Orleans’ rowdy Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras in Lake Charles offers ...
