Thinking of the family at this time.

Mr. Arnold Kolah “AK” Brown, of Savannah, GA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Arnold was born in Charleston, SC, on April 12, 1938 to the late Thelma Lee Brown and Arthur Kolah Brown. He grew up in Lake City, SC, and was baptized in the Lake City Baptist Church. After graduating from Lake City High School in 1956 he attended the University of South Carolina and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor's degree in philosophy. He became an Eagle Scout and taught High School math in Columbia, SC. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement, regularly attending marches, protests, and meetings. Soon thereafter he developed a passion for computing and became an accomplished COBOL programmer, working and contracting for numerous companies like Coca-Cola, Alltel, and Magnum Communications.

Arnold was married to Gladys Lilian Hamilton from 1967 to 1990 in Atlanta, and is survived by his two sons, Benjamin and Andrew. Arnold married Nancy S. Goodman in 2017 and lived together in Savannah until his passing. He was a warm, loving husband, friend, and father gifted with a quick dry wit, intelligence, and compassion for his fellow man. He valued logic and science and was deeply curious and inquisitive. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh. He was a voracious reader, avid traveler and swimmer, and had a lifelong love for classical music. He was patient and kind.

Arnold is survived by his wife of 9 years, Nancy Goodman, his sisters Betty Lee DeWitt, of Savannah, GA, Bernice Melanie Bascom (Bill), of Kirkwood, MO; his two sons, Benjamin Hamilton Brown (Tianyue Yang) of Suwanee, GA, and Andrew Connell Brown, of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Lucas Yang Brown of Suwanee, GA, Landon Lee Brown of Suwanee, Ga, and Laura Yang Brown of Suwanee, GA.

He was preceded in death by his brother and good friend, Dr. James Arthur Brown (Patsy), who passed in 2021.

Funeral service will be held at Fox and Weeks (4605 Hwy 80 East, Savannah GA 31410) on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 2:00 pm.

The family will receive friends from 12:45 PM to 1:45 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Carolina Funeral Home, 215 E. Highway 378 By-Pass, Scranton SC, with a graveside service to follow at 2:00 PM at Lake City Cemetery, North Church Street, Lake City.

Ever wonder why a mule’s tail was trimmed into ‘bells’? Back in the day, the Army relied heavily on mules. A green, untrained mule had its tail shaved. Once it was trained to carry a pack, a single bell-shaped notch was cut into its tail. When it learned to pull a wagon, a second bell was added. If the mule was also trained to be ridden, a third tassel was trimmed below the others. So, a ‘three-bell mule’ was fully trained and highly versatile—making it easy to spot the right animal for the job just by glancing at its tail.
Has anyone heard of this? I thought it was interesting.
