“People love mystery, and that is why they love my paintings.” —Salvador Dalí

Salvador Dalí was born on this day in 1904 in Catalonia, Spain, a regional identity he proudly asserted throughout his life. He moved to Madrid in 1922 to study at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Although best known for his virtuosity and imagination as a Surrealist painter, Dalí had an extraordinarily varied practice that included drawing, sculpture, theatrical design, fashion collaborations, print advertising, film, and more.

In January 1937, Dalí visited the museum during a stopover between trips to New York and Los Angeles. Standing in the galleries with his painting, "A Chemist Lifting with Extreme Precaution the Cuticle of a Grand Piano," he described the unease his work evoked: the "objects…appear in the same connection as in dreams. Each person can be several people at the same time.”

See several works by Dalí currently on view in Galleries 395 and 397.
