David Rankin’s Next Zoomshop / August 16 / 1-4pm - Creating Elegant Watercolor Blends in Tiny Areas of a Subject -

In Transparent Watercolor, the ability to paint one brush full of very bright color… right next to an area of “still wet brushstroke” of bright color… and have each color retain its strong brilliance and area… is a refined artistic skill. I’m not talking about Wet-in-Wet brushwork, done mostly on a wet surface, brushing wet color into a wet surface.

Kissed-Edge Blending, is done on dry paper. It is a term I use to define the skill of carefully “blending edges” of one color into another… without overpowering either.

All too often watercolor painters complain of ending up with “muddy… lifeless colors”. And the main reason for this is that they are using brushwork where one color literally overpowers another. A good example is when you have a subject with a bright yellow area… right next to an area of bright red. If in fact you use the wrong brushwork procedure the wet yellow will blend too much with the wet red brushwork. And instead of a yellow area and a red area… you get Orange as they “overblend”.

Instead… by using Kissed-Edge Blending Procedure… you can end up with a distinct area of bright yellow, right next to a very bright red… with delicate soft edges in between.

It’s not magic or accident… it’s good brushwork, with a cool procedure.

And to teach this skill… David uses “Birds” as the practice subject. Once you know how to do this correctly, the procedures can be used on very large areas of wet color… or very tiny. It’s great procedure… with great brushwork… to create very elegant watercolor blends in any subject.
