This past Sunday, January 11, 2026 the Barton County Historical Society (BCHS) met for their first quarterly meeting of the year. After a brief discussion regarding electing the 2026 BCHS Board, nominations were voted upon and officers will be elected at the next Board meeting. Following the business portion, members and guests were treated to a presentation given by Vice President Ed Keltner. Keltner being a resident of Liberal, Missouri provided photographs and information on the explosion of 1935 at the strip mine in Liberal causing the death of local residents and multiple injuries. One of the most eye opening facts were the settlements with the widow and survivors. The widow received $1538 paid weekly in $6 increments. The $6 would cease if she married or passed away. She also received $150 for funeral expenses. The program was enjoyed along with refreshments.
The next meeting will be held April 12, 2026 . To join the BCHS it is $10 or $100 for a lifetime membership. We would love to have to as a member!

IT'S PROGRAM TIME AGAIN!!

This Sunday,
July 13 at 2 pm at the Barton County Memorial Park.

This will be an interesting program as it is dealing with the old legal records that have been stored away for many many, years in the courthouse attic. Several volunteer individuals have been busy this past year documenting and digitizing the old legal records. This will be a good opportunity to come listen and see for yourselves
what information from the past has been dusted off and discovered!
I'm sure a story
to tell all from the past may be revealed!
Oh, and light refreshments will be served after the program.
Looking forward to everyone showing up.
