The Opening

Was filled with fascination. It was wonderful to discuss Bob’s artwork, and Bob, with such intensity.

Lots of knowledgeable collectors out.

He created this in the moment. My camera was set on some weird setting, sorry. Just listen.

Perfect

Too much fun to capture it all. These are mostly of the quieter moments. I hope you all had a great time tonight. 🤍

Robert Allen Nelson was a multidisciplinary artist whose career spanned more than 75 years as a master draftsman, painter, printmaker, and sculptor. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art and the American Federation of Arts.

Nelson’s drawing collage process was meticulous and physical. He drew individual figures, objects, and fragments separately. Then he cut and recombined them into dense, layered compositions. These assembled worlds are not illustrations of a single narrative but accumulations of relationships where meaning arises through placement, scale, and unexpected adjacency.

His imagery draws from literature, mythology, history, early science fiction, technology, and his personal experiences as a pilot, cavalry soldier, meat packer, and professor. Recurring figures from popular and literary culture, such as Buck Rogers, Oz, and mythological and science-fiction figures, appear alongside historical and bionic forms. These combinations reflect Nelson’s interest in stories of time and lived experience from being born in the 1920s. His drawings form a non-linear composition where historical and cultural figures share a common field. George Washington may stand alongside literary characters, artists, or animals. Mythic characters enter the same space as part of a broader visual conversation where invention, authority, imagination, and survival coexist. Even references to Surrealism, such as Dalí, who appears in many works, are filtered through Nelson’s structured, system-based approach. His work is less about dream logic and more about organizing experience into interrelated systems.
