Peter Wentz Farmstead

Peter Wentz Farmstead 18th-century historic house museum and working farm illustrating rural life in colonial PA Voted Montco Happening's Best Historic Spot of 2022!
(1)

Peter and Rosanna Wentz settled here in 1744. By 1758, they had built their English Georgian style house which featured many elements reflecting their German heritage. In the autumn of 1777, the Wentz home became temporary headquarters for General George Washington and his staff. After the war, Peter Wentz sold the farm to Devault Beiber. In 1794, it was purchased by Schwenkfelder Reverend Melchio

r Schultz and his family. Generations of the Schultz family continued to live and farm here until 1969, when the County of Montgomery purchased the property. The County restored the house to the way it would have appeared in the 1770s, when it served as Washington’s headquarters. The farm buildings, livestock, and kitchen garden represent early Pennsylvania German farming culture and practices in the region. The Peter Wentz Farmstead is a designated National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. Peter Wentz owned two enslaved men while he lived here. One of these men, Jack, made two attempts to escape to freedom. Tax records and runaway ads help us tell Jack’s story within the larger context of slavery in early Pennsylvania. TOURS

Our bank barn is getting some much needed TLC.

The crews from Ram Construction Enterprises are on site replacing the 50+ year old cladding on our bank barn. The barn is not an original structure to the site, but a reconstruction built in the 70s using original stone foundations and wood structure collected from three other historic barns. Over the years, the doors, roof, and shutters have all been replaced, and now it’s time to update the cladding. The stone sections and internal structure will remain unchanged, and aside from looking better, the barn won’t look any different. This is just part of maintaining a preserved historic site!

Get out of our way weather! We have sheep to shear!

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are NOT cancelling Sheep Shearing Day 2026. Due to the inclement weather currently forecast, things have been scaled back slightly, but farming doesn't stop due to rain! We still plan to shear our sheep at 11am and 1pm. There will still be cooking demonstrations and house tours, the museum shop will be open with special springtime items, and Tuckers' Tales Puppet Theatre will still be doing their show in the barn at noon and 2pm. Unfortunately, we won't be able to have a food truck, so we recommend either packing a lunch or stopping by a local place in either Skippack or Lansdale. Remember, a little rain never hurt anyone, so we hope to see you there!

04/23/2026

It's a beautiful spring day today, and will be tomorrow too! stop by the farmstead and take a walk, or a tour. We're open 10 to 4, tours leaving at the top of every hour until 3. Hope to see you!
