Working between studios in Florida and California, Doug Merskin creates striking contemporary compositions using mineral pigments, metallic powders, acrylics, and heat-sculpted substrates. His pieces bring dimension, luminosity, and movement that shift beautifully with light and perspective.

Drawing from his background in construction, design, and fabrication, Merskin’s work feels both architectural and deeply organic, connected to the energy of coastal landscapes.

The original Hollywood Sign stood over the hills for more than fifty years. It watched the golden age of film come and go, and in 1978 it was taken down and left in storage. Most people assumed that was the end of it.

In 2007, Bill Mack bought it.

Since then he has done something no other artist has attempted. He takes the actual metal from that 1923 sign, restores it by hand to keep the weathering and the rust and the history intact, and paints on it. Every piece is one of a kind, created on a piece of the most recognized landmark in entertainment. When the metal is used, it's gone. There will never be more of it.

A study in stillness and grace.
Bill Mack draws the figure forward out of the surface itself, a reclining form half-draped in a flowing robe, caught in a moment of quiet repose.

This is alto-relief at its most refined: the depth, the shadow, the sense of a body emerging into the viewer’s own space, all achieved through a technique few artists alive still command.

Mack is widely regarded as the foremost living relief sculptor, reviving a classical method that dates back centuries. In Concerto Adorned, that mastery is fully on display, every fold of fabric and turn of the figure shaped to catch the light.

Created in 2022. Available in bonded bronze, mixed metals, and sand finishes.
