The holiday stems from Candlemas, an old European tradition where clergy blessed candles for winter. German immigrants brought this weather lore to Pennsylvania, but they had to make a quick substitution: since hedgehogs and badgers were scarce, they recruited the local groundhog to take over the job of "weather prognosticator."
By the 1880s, the event became a formalized ritual, with Punxsutawney, PA, establishing itself as the world-famous epicenter of the custom.
The Shadow Rule
The "science" of the day is simple:
Shadow spotted: If the groundhog sees its shadow on February 2nd, it retreats back into its burrow, signaling six more weeks of winter.
No shadow: If the sky is overcast and no shadow appears, an early spring is on the way.
