What do Katharine Hepburn and a Prohibition-era speakeasy have in common? A healthy disregard for the rules.

Hepburn was never one to play by the rules. Known for her fierce independence, unconventional style, and outspoken personality, the four-time Academy Award winner challenged expectations both on and off the screen.

Her rebellious spirit echoed the defiance of the Prohibition era. Throughout the 1920s, Americans found creative ways to skirt the nationwide ban on alcohol, slipping into secret speakeasies, raising glasses behind closed doors, and embracing a culture that refused to be restrained.

“I find that you really don’t know a man until you play cards with him.” 🃏

Spoken by the fictionalized Arnold Rothstein in HBO’s "Boardwalk Empire," the line is fitting for a character inspired by one of organized crime’s most notorious gamblers.

The real Arnold Rothstein made his name in New York’s gambling underworld, developing a reputation as a skilled gambler and influential underworld figure. He allegedly had an appetite for casino games, cards, and horse racing.

Rothstein relied on an extensive network of advisers and informants to reduce the uncertainty surrounding his wagers. He was accused of engineering the outcomes of horse races and reportedly operated an illegal casino in Manhattan.

His name also became linked to one of the biggest scandals in American sports history: the fixing of the 1919 World Series. Rothstein was indicted but never convicted in connection with the scandal. He maintained that while he made money betting on the series, others were responsible for compromising members of the Chicago White Sox.

"Boardwalk Empire" blended real figures from organized crime history with fictionalized storylines, bringing Rothstein, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and others to the screen.
