ESMoA got an incredible private walkthrough of Illuminating Matter, the stunning solo exhibition by artist Maria Greenshields-Ziman () at Matter Studio Gallery (). Maria walked us through her process, her materials, and the ideas behind the work. It was one of those rare, behind-the-scenes moments that deepened our appreciation for every piece in the room.

Gary Tyler is an artist whose quilt-based works explore justice, resilience, and hope shaped by nearly 42 years of wrongful imprisonment. His work Evolve (2025) centers a butterfly amid colorful geometric forms, using the language of quilting to speak to transformation and renewal.

Paired with his work is a portrait of Nelson Mandela by photographer Peter Badge, recipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for peacefully dismantling apartheid and guiding South Africa toward democracy.

Both men endured decades of unjust incarceration and emerged as enduring symbols of resilience, reflecting that shared journey from imprisonment to possibility.

California-based artist Cole Sternberg () works across painting, sculpture, and film to explore humanity's complex and inevitable bond with nature, asking what remains when human ambition meets the forces of the natural world. His painting, "her stripes faded, but for a moment of lilac glory guarding against the sun" (2018), captures that tension through layered washes of color evoking light, water, and slow change.

Paired with his work is a portrait of Al Gore by photographer Peter Badge. Gore was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless effort to bring the climate crisis to the world's attention, recognized by the Nobel Committee as one of the most effective communicators the environmental movement has ever had.

Together, they ask: what does it mean to protect what we love before it fades?
