A New York State Revolutionary War Trail Site

One of the finest pre-Revolutionary War homes on Long Island, Rock Hall was built in 1767 for Josiah Martin, a wealthy West Indian plantation owner. The Georgian-style home belonged to two of the area’s most famous families, the Martins and Hewletts. In 1948, the Hewlett family deeded Rock Hall to the Town of Hempstead. After an extensive restoration, it opened as a museum in 1953. Rock Hall is also affiliated with the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA). The museum offers guided tours, programs of historic interest, special lectures and an educational presentation. Current exhibits include Rock Hall Archaeology, a permanent display of 18th and 19th-century artifacts excavated from the grounds and cellar of the museum. The Warming Kitchen, Cold Storage Room and Wine Cellar offer fascinating views of the rarely seen working areas in an 18th century plantation-style home. The Friends of Rock Hall is a voluntary organization that works closely with the museum to sponsor programs of interest. The Friends also raise funds to purchase furnishings and to sponsor historic research. Memberships are available starting at $20 per individual, with paid members entitled to a 10% discount on Museum Gift Shop purchases.

During the American Revolution, St. George’s Church in Hempstead was a crucial point of conflict due to the town’s status as a stronghold for Loyalists like the Martin family. Before the British arrived, American troops occupied the building in 1776. They converted the church into a storehouse, and forbade the rector from praying for King George III, and allegedly used this communion table as a dining table for soldiers.

Following the Battle of Long Island in 1776, the British army occupied Hempstead and used the church as both military headquarters and a place of worship. In 1780,
British troops applied to use the church as a granary for non-religious reasons.

A committee, led by Dr. Samuel Martin of Rock Hall and Leffer Haughwout, protested and petitioned the king so that the church would not be desecrated.

This weekend we launched Rock Hall's newest exhibit, "Which Side Are You On?" in our new Vistor/Education Center. The Friends of Rock Hall also honored this year's scholarship recipient. Come visit the exhibit during museum hours. Wednesday-Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday 12-4pm. Admission is free.

Which Side Are You On?
As the United States marks its semiquincentennial, Long Island stands as a powerful reminder of the challenges, sacrifices, and divided loyalties that
shaped the Revolutionary era.

Situated just miles from British occupied New York City, Long Island was one of the most politically divided areas in the colonies and became one of the most strategically vital and most conflicted regions.

This exhibit will explore how the Martin family of Rock Hall stood at the crossroads of the Revolution
