Dearborn County Historical Society Dearborn County Historical Society is the sole repository of historical materials pertaining to all people in all times of Dearborn County’s past.

Established in 1984, the Dearborn County Historical Society is the sole repository of historical materials pertaining to all people in all times of Dearborn County’s past. While the Society’s mission is to preserve its collection of artifacts, photographs, documents and research materials for the education of future generations, today’s visitors can enjoy Dearborn County history through the Societ

y’s exhibits, genealogical research assistance, publications and programs. The Society is located in the historic 1818 Vance-Tousey House, home of Samuel C. Vance, Lawrenceburg’s founder. The house, set apart by its soaring spiral staircase and grand riverfront façade, is considered one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the State of Indiana. Additionally, the Society is steward to the 1820 Angevine Log Cabin, located in the Society’s Pioneer Homestead across the street.

Celebrating 100 years.. U.S. Route 50 was officially commissioned in 1926 as a foundational part of the original U.S. Highway System. Rather than being built in a single year, the 3,019-mile transcontinental route was pieced together from existing auto trails, local roads, and wagon paths, with ongoing construction and paving continuing into the 1950s.
US 50 was initially realigned and rebuilt around Aurora in 1950. Later, a massive four-lane expansion project was constructed through the area. Property acquisition for this project started around 1957, and construction concluded, extending and upgrading the route.
This aerial photograph shows how old US50 came through Cochran by the Cochran Chair Company. When the new US50 was realigned and rebuilt in the 1950s it cut the little town of Cochran in half.

Auctioneer Hap Web begins his rhythmic chance selling the antique oil burning chandelier which once graced the court room of the Wilmington courthouse. It was purchased at the Wilmington Court House auction in 1976 by Edward Kerr of Aurora and eventually purchased by special donors of the Dearborn County Historical Society. It now graces the top of beautiful spiral stairway at the Vance-Tousey House Museum.

This photo was taken about 1912. If you don't recognize it the building still stands on the corner of Ridge and Brown streets in Greendale. In the photo George Rupert owner of Greendale Grocery is standing in front of the store.
Harry Kern later rented the grocery store from Rupert and in 1922 the building and the store were sold to George Dietrich and operated the store until 1937 selling it to Lawrenceburg Bakery owners Henry Groh and Sebastian Daus. They added an addition to the building in the rear and installed ovens and a complete bakery. A residence downstairs was remodeled and another edition was built on the south side at the time the occupants were the Lawrenceburg Bakery, Jones Drugstore and Sicking Meat Market.
Over the years there have been many different stores in this building. It will be exciting to see what plans Greendale Main Street has for this historic property!

The Dearborn County Historical Society is exploring new fundraising opportunities — and one delicious idea rolling around is a Deep Fried Oreo Booth! 🍪✨

As many of you know, our organization works year-round to preserve and share the rich history of Dearborn County while also helping organize and grow community events like Light Up Newtown Park and now the expansion into Light Up Greendale Park! 🎄✨

We are currently looking for festivals, fairs, markets, concerts, car shows, community gatherings, and local events where we could potentially set up a Deep Fried Oreo booth to help raise funds for these amazing community projects.

Do you know of: • Local festivals? • Music events? • School or church events? • Riverfront gatherings? • Fall festivals? • Holiday markets? • Community celebrations?

Drop your ideas, contacts, or event suggestions below! 👇

Every Oreo sold would help support community beautification, holiday displays, historical preservation efforts, and future projects throughout Dearborn County.

And honestly… who can resist a warm Deep Fried Oreo? 😄🍪

On May 28, 1977, one of the deadliest nightclub fires in American history changed our entire region forever. The Beverly Hills Supper Club fire claimed the lives of 165 people and injured more than 200 others during Memorial Day weekend.

For many throughout the Tri-State area — including countless families from Dearborn County, Indiana — the Beverly Hills Supper Club was more than just a nightclub. It was where people celebrated anniversaries, attended weddings, watched entertainers, danced, dined, and made memories. Located just across the river from Cincinnati, the club drew visitors from all over Southeastern Indiana, Northern Kentucky, and Southwest Ohio. Many people from Lawrenceburg, Aurora, Greendale, Bright, and surrounding communities remember traveling there for a “big night out.”

The fire broke out during a packed performance night featuring entertainer John Davidson. Investigations later revealed overcrowding, code violations, limited exits, and possible electrical issues all contributed to the tragedy. Debate over the exact cause continues even today.

In the aftermath, the disaster changed fire safety laws, building codes, occupancy enforcement, and emergency response procedures across the country.

But beyond the statistics and investigations were real people.

Parents never came home. Friends were lost. Families throughout our region were forever changed.

Even here in Dearborn County, many still remember hearing the news reports throughout that long night. Some remember knowing victims. Others remember family members who escaped. Some may even still have ticket stubs, photographs, or stories passed down from that era.

As a historical society, it is important that we remember not only the triumphs of our local history, but also the tragedies that impacted the people of our communities. Events like the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire remind us how closely connected the Tri-State region has always been.

Today, we pause to remember the 165 lives lost, the survivors, the firefighters and first responders, and the families who carried the pain of that night for decades afterward. We went to the site and memorial today to honor and remember.

If you or your family remember the Beverly Hills Supper Club… if you were there… if you have stories or memories connected to that tragic night… we invite you to share them below so those memories and lives are never forgotten. ❤️

🕰️ Or something hidden in plain sight!

After everyone has had time to guess, we’ll reveal the answer along with the history and story behind the location.

And we will start with THIS right here! 👀
