Israel Stevens was a wealthy farmer, township official and early elder of Maidenhead Church in what was then Maidenhead Township. From 1797 to 1828, Israel served as an elected township official in many capacities. He was a committeeman, freeholder, constable, and a commissioner of appeals. He also served on a committee established to manage the business of the education of the poor children of th

e township--the prelude to public education in the township. He was an active member of Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church (Maidenhead Church), serving the church in many capacities. He married Ruth, born 1770, died 1851, but they had no children. Israel died in 1848, aged 85, having served some 50 years as an elder of Maidenhead Church. The Israel Stevens House is a very good and well-preserved example of Federal style architecture in an early 19th-century frame farmhouse of two stories and a side-hall plan. It features spacious proportions, large windows, a fine, delicately-ornamented roof entablature and a reeded stringcourse, all well-executed elements of a carpenter-builder's interpretation of Federal/Adam style design.
