Leavenworth County Historical Society The Leavenworth County Historical Society is a non-profit organization with a mission to collect and

The Leavenworth County Historical Society, founded in 1954, Leavenworth's Centennial year, owns and operates the Carroll Mansion, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Properties and the oldest museum in Leavenworth County. The museum attracts visitors year round from all over the country, and serves not only as an institution that acquires, preserves, and promotes the rich history

of Leavenworth County, but also as an ambassador. Larger themes of the history of the state of Kansas and the United States are also explored and presented. Being a historic home museum and county historical society, these themes are evident in guided tours, special exhibits, programming, research, and publications. The Society is currently seeking to build an extension to the museum to properly store and preserve its ever-growing collection of artifacts, provide for handicap accessibility, and as a research center for early Kansas history.

Hey, hey! Grab your Sears catalog and head on down to Haymarket Square Friday, June 26 for a fun filled evening of outhouse races! Races start at 7:00pm. Come early and enjoy the free concert performed by Bo and the Beards starting at 5:00. Consesions will be available to purchase on site. This event should have you lined up waiting for a seat! The event is sponsored by the Leavenworth Lions club. For more information or to participate in the event call 913-306-1130.

Outhouse facts. Outhouses sat over a dug hole 4-6’ deep and typically sat at the rear property line far away from the cistern which collected potable water. Once full, the hole would be filled and the structure moved a few feet over to a new pit. People who could afford it had stone, brick or concrete lined pits. These pits could be dipped and cleaned out by a local business that specialized in such work. Can you guess what the guy who performed the clean out was called?

Additionally, outhouses served as a trash pit for the home. In modern times, “privy diggers” excavate these old pits in search of discarded and accidentally dropped treasures such as bottles, jewelry, coins, toys and just about anything that would fit through the hole. Pictured is a selection of “treasure” I’ve recovered over the years.

This rare photograph captures William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody around 1862, when he was only 16 or 17 years old, long before he became one of the most recognizable figures of the American frontier. In the image, the future showman appears youthful and serious, standing at the edge of a life that would soon turn into legend. Born in 1846, Cody grew up during a period of rapid change and expansion across the American West. As a teenager, he took on demanding work that exposed him to danger and adventure early in life, including riding for the Pony Express and working as an army scout on the frontier.

As the Civil War unfolded, Cody joined Company H of the 7th Kansas Cavalry, serving from 1863 to 1865. The experience placed him directly in the turbulent atmosphere of a nation divided by conflict. After the war, he continued building a reputation across the plains through his skill as a hunter and guide. He eventually earned the nickname “Buffalo Bill” while supplying bison meat to crews working on the Kansas Pacific Railroad, a task that required endurance, sharp shooting, and long days across open country.

Rather than allowing those frontier years to fade into memory, Cody transformed them into entertainment that fascinated audiences around the world. His famous “Wild West” shows blended storytelling, riding demonstrations, and reenactments inspired by frontier life, helping shape how generations imagined the American West. By the time he became an international celebrity, Buffalo Bill Cody represented more than a single man’s journey—he had become a symbol of a rapidly changing era in American history.
