Pathways of History begins tomorrow. This free, self-guided weekend tour invites visitors to explore 38 historical sites and museums across Morris County on May 2 and 3, 2026.

Before school buses and grade levels, every community built its own schoolhouse. Three preserved one-room schoolhouses across Morris County tell the story of how local communities educated their children.

The Little Red Schoolhouse in Florham Park was completed in 1867 and served students in grades 1 through 8. Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, it is so embedded in the borough's identity that it appears on the town flag and on first responder vehicles. Open both days.

Second Union School in Denville was built in 1861 after fire destroyed the original 1816 schoolhouse on the same site. The school united the villages of Franklin and Ninkey into one community that became Union Hill. New to the Pathways tour this year and open Sunday, May 3.

The Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum in Chatham was built in 1860 and originally named the Mount Vernon School in honor of George Washington. For more than 150 years it has served the township as a school, community center, town hall and now a museum documenting three centuries of local history. Open Sunday, May 3.

Rain or shine, the tours run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

DID YOU KNOW...Throughout the King Homestead Museum are unusual pastoral murals painted in 1936 by James W. Marland, a friend of the King family. He did these in gratitude for King family hospitality to him as a house guest. There are remnants of his murals & decorations throughout the house.
⌛️Come check out these murals and more Sunday 4/12 between 1-4pm for our first opening of 2026!⏳️

Calling Roxbury history buffs.. sharing for our friends at First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna!⬇️

Sat Oct 25th! Don't miss it!
Join us on a guided, evening walking tour through our lantern-lit cemetery, where you'll visit several resident "spirits" who'll share their stories and some local history. Our cemetery dates back to the 1600's (likely earlier!) when the Lenni Lenape roamed the land. This year, there'll be "spirits" from the colonial & revolutionary times, in celebration of our country's 250th anniversary. The moonlight cemetery tour is always a great, family-friendly (dark, a little creepy, but not scary) and fun-filled event.
** All proceeds go to our stained glass restoration fund - preserving history! **
