Artist Statement
I am originally from Cuba and graduated from the San Alejandro National Art School of Fine Arts with Bachelor of the Arts in Painting, Drawing, and Sculpting. Shortly after, I continued my studies at the Superior Institute of Industrial Design in Havana, Cuba and earned a Certificate Degree in Informational Design in 1984. Upon graduation, I began my career as an art teacher for t

hree years in the Cultural House in Artemisa, Cuba. Later I continued teaching for five years in the Ernesto Guevara Palace of Youth and Students. Finally, I found my niche where I could express my artistic talents in The Scientific Academy of Cuba. For the following twenty years, I was the principal scientific illustrator and was published in the Annual Yearly Report for the Anthropological Center from 1984 – 2004. My anthropological studies, with an emphasis on the cultural customs of the Cuban people, gave me the chance to gain knowledge about the traditional culture of my country. Inspired by these invaluable experiences, my artwork represents the customs of the Cuban people, the landscapes, and the vibrant colors which I have had displayed in several local and international exhibits and was honored to win the Distinction for the National Cuban Culture in 2001. Because I had the opportunity to meet and work with many people from all parts of the world, I was able to make comparisons between the cultures of other countries and the Cuban culture. The outcome of these invaluable encounters helped me to expand my understanding of our shared humanity, which is expressed through my paintings, which ultimately, explores the customs and the habits of people throughout the world. Currently, I am living in Southwest Florida and am still exploring, this time, the cultural identities found in the vast landscape of the United States. I continue to express my curiosity via art, painting with oil, charcoal, acrylic, and mixed media on canvas with traditional style and spatula technique where my interpretations come to life.

One night I was showing Mario various photos of a goddess perched on the moon and suggested that he paint his version, so here it is.  I hope you all enjoy the magic as much as I do.  Thanks for being open to suggestions, Mario!  I love her and you!

Claire entered me into a "Paint the Beach" contest. The wind was blustering, sand flying, clouds were speeding by as I painted this scene of Lover's Key Beach.
