Fort Defiance will be closed for regular tours tomorrow. We will be hosting approx. 400 school kids for our Hands on History school program. Please visit us over the weekend for our regular hours Sat. 10 - 4 and Sunday 1 - 4.

Thanks to support from the National Park Service, Destination by Design (DbD) is developing a 50-mile trail master plan for a section of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail in western North Carolina to link Lenoir, Morganton, and Lake James.

On this day in 1788, William Lenoir entered into a contract with Thomas Fields for the building of his home which will become known as Fort Defiance.
"Articles of Agreement Between Thomas Fields and William Lenoir Both of Wilkes County North Carolina - Made this 18th Day of March A.D. 1788 - Witnefseth that the said Thomas Fields hath agreed to Build a house Forty feet long & Twenty Eight feet wide Two Stories high with four Rooms on each Story; for the aforesaid William Lenoir, in the following manner (To Wit) The said Lenoir is to get all the timber except the shingles and said Fields is to frame said house with proper Girders and every thing that's necessary thereto -------------------"

I have a few spots left for our annual Valentine's Day Dinner. The tentative menu is:
Appetizers: Mushroom or ham toast, pork belly skewers and/or bacon cream cheese roll-ups
Salad: Salmagundy (or a dressed salad)
Soup: Chestnut soup with creme fraiche
Entree: (choice of one) Stuffed Chine(tenderloin) of Pork or Curried Lamb Stew
Sides: Greens with smoked Va. ham and bourbon mashed sweet potatoes
Dessert: Lemon Creme Tart with raspberry sauce
