New England’s Scenic Train Rides road trip takes you to nine rail trips that show off some of the region’s best views. It starts in Hancock, Maine, on the Downeast Scenic Railroad, where old rail cars pass through thick woods and over long wooden trestles. From there, head to Unity to ride the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad, known for quiet farmland scenes and small towns. In New Hampshire, the Conway Scenic Railroad rolls into the White Mountains, followed by the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which climbs to the highest peak in the Northeast. In Vermont, the Green Mountain Railroad passes covered bridges and wide mountain views. Back in New Hampshire, the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad runs right along the lake. In Massachusetts, the Cape Cod Central Railroad moves through cranberry bogs and marsh. In Connecticut, the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat pairs a train ride with a river cruise. The trip ends in the Berkshires on the Berkshire Scenic Railway.

FALSE! Melanie had never heard the term "foamer" before starting with us. However...her social media platforms are exploding with posts so we are pretty sure she is becoming a rail fan.

Let's play a game and get to know our executive director, Melanie Seiden. True or False? We were pleasantly surprised when we found out Melanie actually already knew what the term "foamer" meant.

- RDCs AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE
A recent addition to the BSRM photo archives captures a line of Budd Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs) at a Boston service facility on an overcast day in June 1968.

As part of the museum’s strategic planning efforts, we’ve developed a collection management policy to better focus and refine the artifacts we acquire and interpret. A key priority is building a comprehensive collection of images and documentation—both technical and promotional—that supports our nationally significant RDC fleet, the largest of any preservation group in the country.

RDCs were a ubiquitous part of rail travel across New England beginning in the early 1950s, including right here in the Berkshires. This image helps tell that story.

A NOD TO RAILFANS
As long as there has been railroads, there have been railfans. They’re a unique bunch, with all types of subcultures based on geography, equipment, etc. Above all though, railfanning is about community, friendship and fun. The image, taken along the New Haven Railroad mainline in Old Greenwich (November 1963), reflects those timeless values.

As a disclaimer, if you do “railfan”, please make sure it’s done in a respectful, safe manner.

SOUTHBOUND @ GREAT BARRINGTON
With more snow in the forecast for the region this weekend, it seemed fitting to revisit a warm summer scene from the Berkshires.

Sunday, July 30, 1961 was a perfect midsummer day — seasonably warm but not oppressive, with a high of 79 degrees and mostly sunny skies. In this photograph, a southbound New Haven Railroad train pauses at Great Barrington, led by the iconic FL9 locomotive. These engines were uniquely designed to operate into New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, drawing power from the electrified third rail, making them true hybrids of their time.

Many of the passengers aboard were likely heading reluctantly back to the city after a weekend in the Berkshires — experiencing what today we might call the “Sunday Scaries.”
