Promoting and advocating for the preservation, interpretation, and cultural enrichment of Lewes.

From Captain Kidd and the eternal rhythms of the tides to the salty courage of the Delaware pilots and the nationally-recognized architecture of our historic district - Lewes' past is colorful, unique and proud. The ancient beam of old Cape Henlopen Light still haunts the local seas and local imaginations in "Delaware's Saltiest Town." The Lewes Historical Society began in 1961 as local residents identified a need to preserve Lewes' architectural heritage and for an organization to act as a steward for Lewes' past - a history that stretches back to humble Dutch origins in 1631. The Society has been recognized as one of Delaware's greatest assets and has been honored for our efforts by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and by the American Association for State & Local History. The Society celebrates the heritage of Lewes -- "The First Town in The First State!"

Our new Executive Director of Historic Lewes, Meg Clifton

Reflecting on my first week as Executive Director at Historic Lewes!

What a wonderful first week! I’m feeling incredibly grateful for the warm welcome, the conversations, and the opportunity to begin this exciting chapter with such a dedicated and passionate community. It has been a pleasure getting to know the staff, connecting with our amazing volunteers, meeting members of the community, generous supporters, and spending time with our dedicated Board. Each conversation has reinforced what makes Historic Lewes so special: the people who care deeply about preserving our history, sharing our stories, and ensuring that our heritage continues to inspire future generations. I’m excited to listen, learn, build relationships, and work together to support the important mission of Historic Lewes. I look forward to discovering all that we can accomplish together as we celebrate our past while helping shape our future. Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me so warmly. I’m honored to be in my home town and part of this community and excited for the journey ahead!
