Mansion update: I have a few grant requests in for help with construction, and we are planning an event for September 20th. I would love to hear your ideas. Right now, an old car show and an antique auction on the grounds of the mansion. Looking for fiddlers, old timey bands, and folks to wear turn of the century clothing. Willing to donate an antique? Help with the event?

There are other ways to give! In Orofino, a dynamic group of citizens formed a Friends of Lewis-Clark Early Childhood Program chapter. Members include Joe Pippenger, Sarah Johnson, Amber Hanes Miller, Tami Plank of Community Action, and an ever-expanding group of interested supporters. The goal was to raise $30,000 to move the Orofino Center from its current location to the school grounds of Orofino Elementary. At last count the group raised $35,000 for the project and the money is still coming in.

Hello! Just an update to let you know we are gathering support for Phase II of the Mansion Project. During this phase we will repair and replace the front porch and install the pillars. We will need $130,000, for this phase of the project. Idaho Heritage Trust offered an $8,000 match grant. Descendants of the Hurlbuts kicked in $4,600. How much can you give to see the work on the mansion continue?

In 2012, your donations helped stop the deterioration of the Hurlbut Mansion. Because of your contributions, we were able to begin the reconstruction of the second floor balcony, replace the shingles, reinforce the roof’s infrastructure, and remove the columns to be restored.
Because of your monetary support, we were able to show to our contributing charitable foundations that the Lewiston community cares about the Hurlbut Mansion.
We needed your support and you gave your support! Thank you! You made it possible!
As we enter our next phase of rehabilitation, we need you to continue to show your monetary support to the Hurlbut Mansion for the very reasons that last year was a success.
In 2013, your donations coupled with contributing foundations and corporations will allow us to begin the rehabilitation phase by installing windows, replacing the columns, completing the second story balcony and reinforcing the foundation. Can you imagine the effect these improvements will have on the Mansion?
The second is to visit our website (http://thehurlbutmansion.com), click on the Donate Now link at the top of the page, then follow the directions to contribute via PayPal.
Thank you for your continued support in the restoration of the Hurlbut Mansion project. We are looking forward to a productive 2013!

With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, July is not an easy time to work on a roof in Lewiston, Idaho. But the often-crackling temperatures haven’t stopped a roofing crew from taking on one of the region’s most exciting historic preservation projects, the restoration of Hurlbut Mansion.

I just returned from a planning meeting with Jerry Brotnov of Brotnov Architecture and Planning. We had a discussion about the undertaking of the next stage of rehabilitation of the Hurlbut Mansion. It looks like the windows and the front door will be reinstalled while we raise the funds for the foundation repair and consult engineers. The Mansion will look so much better without boards in the windows!

"Architecture should speak of its time and place but yearn for timelessness"

Wow. Basically the entire roof is now shingled. Some details yet to go, but this building is now safe and secure from the elements for many years to come. Thanks to all of you -- your support has helped make this possible!

Great photo sent to us by a supporter -- Hurlbut Mansion in 1906-1908. We're on the first floor, looking toward the "Reception Room" and "Alcove," where the phonograph player is. The front doors are just out of the frame, on the right. As far as I know, it's the only picture of the inside of the building from its brief time as a private residence. Gives you an idea of the grandeur of the building when it was built, right?

Hey hey, is that the Monkees? Yes, yes it is. And an appearance by Sir Paul McCartney, in a pile of vinyl records found today at the mansion. They seem to all date back at least 38 years, with the last one being Foghat's 1974 "Energized." Pretty dusty, but in otherwise decent shape. Might still be possible to take them on a "slow ride" on a record player ...
