The Illinois State Museum promotes discovery, lifelong learning, and stewardship of the natural and cultural heritage of Illinois. Dickson Mounds Museum, a branch of the Illinois State Museum and a National Historic Site, is on of the major on-site archaeological museums in the United States. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of the American Indian in an awe inspiring journey thr

ough 12,000 years of human experience in the Illinois River Valley. Visitors to the museum, in west-central Illinois, encounter innovative exhibits; exciting hands-on activities; archaeological sites; and a variety of special events in a rural setting. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. Donations are appreciated. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.

Summer is here (almost) and with the return of the warm weather comes the opening of the Eveland Village buildings on the museum grounds! These three buildings house the preserved partial excavations of three Mississippian period ceremonial structures. Starting today, the Eveland Village buildings will be open to the public during regular museum hours, Tuesday- Saturday from 9:00 am- 4:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit to the museum!

Thank you to everyone who has attended one of our Community Listening Sessions or given feedback thought the Virtual Survey. Our next Community Listening Session will be on Wednesday May 13 in Canton!

While we hope to see everyone at one of our in-person community listening sessions, we understand that not everyone will be able to attend. To make sure we reach as many community members as possible we have also added a Virtual Survey Option for those who are unable to attend the in-person community listening sessions. Be sure to join us this Saturday, May 9, at 2:00 p.m. for Kid's Crafter-noon!

Spend time making fun arts and crafts at the Museum! A variety of supplies and materials will be available for kids to create pieces of their liking to take home. All ages are welcome with adult supervision.

This program is held on the second Saturday of each month from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Admission is free and registration is not required.

Join us this Thursday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m. for Tot Time!

This month’s program is all about archaeology and is presented by April Rothenbach, a Visitor Engagement Specialist at Dickson Mounds Museum. Participants will enjoy learning about how archaeologists work to better understand the past and what kinds of tools and technologies they use in their work. Tots and caretakers, expect to enjoy hands-on activities and crafts to take home!

The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is free. Registration is not required. However, groups of 8 or more are encouraged to call the Museum at 309-547-3721 prior to the program date to ensure the availability of supplies. Participants are welcome to enjoy the Museum exhibits after the program.

*New Community Listening Session and Virtual Survey Option added!

We are hosting Community Listening Sessions about Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds!

Dickson Mounds Museum is pleased to announce a series of community listening sessions to be held in the next five weeks. As the museum continues to grow and strategize for its future, we are seeking input from local community members about their experiences, memories, and ideas for the future of Dickson Mounds.

“Dickson Mounds has been a pillar in preserving the history of the Illinois River Valley and as we begin planning for the future of the museum, we want our communities to be a part of that process.” – Sara Shaffer-Henry, Associate Director, Dickson Mounds Museum.

The public is welcome to attend, and no reservation is required. For questions, please contact the museum at (309) 547-3721.

The community listening sessions will be hosted by Sara Shaffer-Henry, Associate Director, on the following dates:

· Saturday, May 2, 2026: 11am-12pm, Lewistown Public Library, 1126 N Main St., Lewistown, IL 61542

· Wednesday, May 6, 2026: 1-2pm, Spoon River College-Havana Campus 324 E Randolph St, Havana, IL 62644

· Wednesday, May 13, 2026: 1-2pm, Spoon River College-Canton Campus Conference Center in Engle Hall- Room 102c, 23235 N. County Hwy. 22, Canton, IL 61520
