Mary Todd Lincoln House

Mary Todd Lincoln House The Mary Todd Lincoln House is the childhood home of Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and the first historic site restored to tell the story of a first lady. Open Mon.-Sat.
(229)

The Mary Todd Lincoln House is the girlhood home of the first lady and wife of the 16th president Abraham Lincoln. The Lincolns visited her family here after their marriage. Today, the museum cultivates public interest in the multilayered past by sharing the story of a woman whose experiences resonate today. Opened in 1977, the museum is the first historic site restored to tell the story of a firs

t lady. Sophisticated and well educated, Mary Todd Lincoln’s success in the White House seemed assured. Yet few women have endured as much controversy and tragedy. Visit her family home to learn more about this fascinating woman! Self-guided tours. Open seasonally March 15th -Nov 30th. Holiday schedule varies. (closed Sun.) $15 adults; $6 youth ages 6–17. Located in downtown Lexington, KY.

Mary Todd Lincoln loved poetry - a love she also shared with her husband, Abraham.

In our collection, we have her personal copy of “The Female Poets of America” published in 1852 and inscribed with her name.

Happy National Poetry Month from the Mary Todd Lincoln House!

Today marks the 161st anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. On the evening of April 14, 1865, the President and Mary Lincoln, along with Major Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris, went to the theatre to see the comedy, Our American Cousin. This playbill from our collection is from that night. While watching the play, President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
