Don't forget to join us next week for our final lecture of 2022! The Frontier Culture Museum's lectures are all free and open to the public.

This presentation explores the importance of the migration of ideas as exhibited in the world of traditional pottery. Emanuel Suter learned the craft in a traditional manner and practiced the trade on his farm in the central Shenandoah Valley. As a refugee from the Civil War, he traveled to Pennsylvania in 1864, where he began to work for an established pottery manufactory. While there he absorbed ideas about how an industrial pottery could operate. Upon his return to the Valley in 1865, Suter set about restructuring his own pottery, and traveled outside of the region to modern potteries in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Ohio. The importance of this analysis lies in its study of the migration of ideas and their effect on a traditional folk craft.

The Sweet Chalybeate Springs spa complex in Alleghany County is a relic of the 19th-century days when the fashionable world of the North and South came to the mineral springs of western Virginia to “take the waters and play the marriage market.” Known since the 18th century, Sweet Chalybeate was developed in 1836 into a commercial resort which lasted until 1918. Although some of the buildings are neglected and deteriorating, the relatively complete collection of mid- and late-19th-century pavilions and cottages attests to the popularity of the resort and provides a poignant picture of a Virginia spa. The springs themselves, claimed to contain the strongest carbonated mineral waters in the nation, still flow freely from the limestone bluff. Chalybeate is a type of mineral water impregnated with salts of iron.

Nelson County’s South Rockfish Valley Rural Historic District comprises a 1,620-acre swath of historic farms, agricultural landscapes, small crossroads, and residential communities. The district boasts a well-preserved rural landscape with a continuous tradition of farming since the first half of the 1700s. An exceptionally fertile valley, its agricultural history chronicles the rise of to***co cultivation for international export from the 18th through the late-19th centuries, the transition to a thriving apple orchard industry from the 1880s through early 1940s, and the present mix of cattle farming and experimentation with viticulture and cider orchards. The district hosts a vibrant collection of 18th-, 19th-, and early-20th-century residences and buildings, representing a variety of vernacular and more formal architectural styles. Particularly noteworthy are several well-preserved late-18th- to early-19th-century farmhouses including three that are individually listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places, as is the 1908 Wintergreen Country Store. The historic crossroads community of Wintergreen saw a succession of stores, mills, and schools from the 1840s through the early 20th century.
