April 6th is ! The VMI tartan is worn by members of the VMI Pipes and Drums. The Pipes and Drums was the idea of by Cadet Donnie Hasseltine, VMI 1997, who received approval and support from Superintendent Maj. Gen. Josiah Bunting III, VMI 1963, and Regimental Band Director Col. John Brodie. Hasseltine worked with Donald Fraser of Scotland to design the tartan (image 3). The colors of the tartan are the school colors of red, yellow, and white, along with bluish-gray color of the VMI uniform. The tartan also has four minor stripes of light blue, green, dark blue, and black, which represent the four ROTC programs at VMI: Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines.
