George Worthing was born 100 years ago today. He was a Liberty legend and treasure. For years, he served as the president of our historical society. Here he is with Juanita at the 2012 Memorial Day parade. What do you remember about George? How would you describe him to someone who never met him?

Happy 199th birthday, Liberty! At this afternoon's open house at the Liberty Library we'll have a collection of sesquicentennial photos on display (thank you for letting us borrow them, Dottie). Come see what your relatives and neighbors looked like in 1977. There are some real gems here! We need help identifying them so be sure to drop by anytime between 1:00-3:00 for our little party.

Tomorrow the town of Liberty will turn 199 years old! The Liberty Library is generously opening their doors to host a drop-in time (thanks, Barb!). Pop in for a few minutes between 1:00-3:00 and grab a piece of cake, if nothing else. Looking forward to seeing you as we celebrate this little town we love so much.
P.S. If you are able, please park elsewhere and walk to the library so the spaces in front of the building are available for those who need something closer. Thank you!

Liberty Village has been home to many businesses throughout our town's history. We are looking for photos and/or memories of those who worked in the canning factory (pictured here), tannery, stores, etc. Have any photos taken inside the old community hall? We would be grateful for the opportunity to scan and return snapshots from those days gone by.

Our historical society collection has quite a few exterior pictures of these various structures, but only a handful inside the buildings or of employees. Can you help us fill the gap? Did any of you work in the village earlier in your life or have family members who did? We love stories!

The residency program of the Maine Preservation organization will be making site visits in our town on Friday, October 3, 2025. If you are interested in the historic preservation of a building you own within Liberty and want to see if this group can fit in a visit to you that day, please send us a message. Include the address of the property you would like them to see, and we will reply with the coordinator's contact information.

Here is their description of this program:
"Our residencies are opportunities for us to immerse ourselves in communities to learn more about ongoing historic preservation efforts, successes, and challenges, and to promote our programs and services. As a small nonprofit that serves a big state, we’ve found this is an effective way of concentrating our efforts. Our residencies usually consist of days packed full of site visits and meetings with community stakeholders, including the full range of historic property owners (private residential, commercial, nonprofit, municipal).

Our intent is to connect with anyone interested in historic preservation or whose work has them interacting with the town’s historic buildings. Past residencies have had us visit a variety of places and meet a host of people, including historical societies, libraries, chambers of commerce, elected leaders, homeowners, realtors, nonprofits and fraternal organizations that steward historic properties, legacy businesses, and even active construction sites."

Two things to remember for tomorrow, Tuesday, September 23.

1) Our next road project event will be held at 7 pm in the Overlock Room of the Liberty Town Office. See the details on the event we created here on our page. As a reminder, we will be discussing the history of homes on Crie Hill, Plummer, and Upper Hostile Valley roads. All are invited. Any of our friends in PALERMO who might have insight into or interest in those neighboring roads are also welcome. This is an area of our town with less recorded history so we are on the hunt for more details.

2) As many of you already know, the drawing for the raffle of this lovely braided rug (35" by 45") made by Hazel Kopishke will take place at the event. We have a few tickets remaining which can be purchase before the meeting begins tomorrow evening. $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Thank you, Hazel, for your beautiful handiwork and generosity.

We look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow.

Our beautiful Liberty has a birthday today. We were incorporated 198 years ago on January 31, 1827. Whether you are a current or former year-round resident, one of our "summer people," or a visitor, we'd love to hear which place in town holds a special memory for you.

📣 Exciting news. We believe a mystery has been solved here in Liberty, Maine!

We published our annual calendar for 2025 without having any details on the cover photo (aside from knowing it was taken in the village). This past week we stumbled onto what appears to be the background story. If we are correct, this picture was taken in September 1892 at the reunion of the Twenty-sixth Maine Regiment which was held in Liberty. The two pages listed below match the details in the scene.

The town did a phenomenal job hosting the hundreds of visitors. During one of the offered meals, they went through 30 large pots of beans! The veteran soldiers were from "every town in the county, from every county in the state, and from several states in the Union." An amazing day in our little town's history! Read about it in these photos...

Some reflections from our LHS president after the recent passing of a key and dear member of our society and community.
"To All;
It is with a heavy heart that I put pen to paper in remembrance of Diane Grosser and her legacy. Diane was what you would call a good soul. Look out our front window and there was Diane taking our neighbor to an appointment or to the grocery. Look out our side window and there was Diane helping with the food delivery from Good Shepherd. Diane volunteered happily to be a guide at the Octagonal Post Office. She was a guiding light for her extended family and friends alike. Always willing to help and share. Her memories of Liberty in past years was a wonderful resource of been there, done that type of information for the Liberty Historical Society. One never heard a harsh word uttered by her. She was always available, if she could be, if you needed her. She will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Diane."
