🎉 Exciting news from the Great Plains Art Museum! 🎉

The Great Plains Art Museum is pleased to announce that it has been awarded an Inspire Grant for Small Museums from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to support a comprehensive survey of approximately 200 works on paper from the museum's collection.

This important project will help us better understand, document, and preserve artworks that reflect the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the Great Plains region. Through detailed assessments, the survey will strengthen the museum's stewardship of these works and help ensure their accessibility for future exhibitions, research, and educational programs.

Works on paper, including drawings, prints, watercolors, and other paper-based media, require specialized care and monitoring. This grant will provide valuable insight into the condition and preservation needs of these collection treasures.

We are grateful to for supporting this work and helping us preserve the stories, artistry, and history represented in our collection for generations to come. Read more: http://www.imls.gov/news/imls-completes-grantmaking-cycle-major-investment-small-american-museums

"Elsewhere/ The Prairie Was Ours" opens at the Great Plains Art Museum Aug. 25, 2026. This exhibition brings together the work of three artists—Elizabeth Burden, Willa Ahlschwede, and Marci Sue Black—descendants of formerly enslaved Black American, immigrant European American, and Indigenous communities shaped by prairie life. Their works use image, sound, artifact, and gesture to trace and unsettle memory.
Burden is the 2026 Elizabeth Rubendall Artist in Residence. During her residency, Sept. 1-12, Burden will create an artwork that will become part of the museum’s permanent collection. Visitors are encouraged to see the artist in action in the lower-level Elizabeth Rubendall Artist-in-Residence Studio & Education Lab during the museum’s public hours.
The exhibition is open through Dec. 19.

Thanks to everyone who attended last night's opening reception for "Like a Moth to the Flame" at the Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Angus creates site-specific, immersive art installations that utilize dead and dried insect specimens to create environments that are often described as otherworldly, magical, and sometimes uncomfortable.
This exhibition is on view through Dec. 19 and admission is always free.
