On View for Hispanic Heritage Month 2025
Title: English Only, Please! (2024)
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Dimensions: 36" x 48"

This powerful piece explores themes of language, identity, and culture. Created in 2024, English Only, Please! invites viewers to reflect on the intersections of heritage, communication, and belonging in contemporary society.

Commentary. Below.

Title: English Only, Please!

When I was a young girl, I was constantly told, “English only” at school. Whenever I spoke Spanish. some educators made me feel as if I were doing something very ugly and wrong. Looking back, it seemed like a way to control us and suppress our cultural identity.

As I grew older, I realized the immense value of knowing two languages. The same words can carry different connotations in different languages, and being bilingual opens doors to deeper creative expression in my art. It has also enhanced my analytical and abstract thinking, giving me a broader perspective in life.

This quote by John Dewey, "If education doesn't teach you to resist injustice, it has failed," emphasizes the civic and moral responsibility of education. It suggests that the purpose of learning extends beyond acquiring knowledge or skills; it must also cultivate an active, critical stance against societal wrongs. Education, in Dewey's view, should empower individuals to identify injustice and equip them with the tools and conviction to challenge it, thereby contributing to a more just society. Without this crucial element, education falls short of its potential and its duty to humanity.

I like this…a powerful piece of art in many ways.

Times Square’s newest icon isn’t a flashing screen or someone in a knockoff Spider-Man suit—it’s a 12-foot bronze sculpture of a young woman, and she’s commanding attention in the best way.

Artist Thomas J. Price just dropped "Grounded in the Stars,” a massive public art piece on the north side of Duffy Square that challenges who we see in monumental spaces—and why. She’s wearing everyday clothes, standing tall and unapologetically taking up space in a spot usually dominated by men (statues included 👀).

This is your sign to actually stop and stare. She’ll be posted up through June 17.

📢 URGENT: The National Endowment for the Arts is Under Attack! 📢
The proposed FY26 federal budget aims to eliminate the NEA entirely. Grants are already being rescinded and funding cycles disrupted.

💬 The NEA fuels local economies, empowers artists, enriches education, and strengthens communities—right here in New Jersey and across the country.

🛑 The arts are not expendable. They are essential.
