πŸ“Έ This Black History Month, Flat Rock Archive, Inc. honors Lewis Howard Latimer, a brilliant inventor and engineer who transformed the world of electric lighting.

"We create our future, by well improving present opportunities: however few and small they are." - Lewis Howard Latimer.

Latimer's words resonate with his remarkable journey. Born to former slaves, he rose to become a key figure in the development of practical electric lighting. His inventions included:

*An improved process for manufacturing carbon filaments, making light bulbs more durable and affordable

*A forerunner to the air conditioner

*The first water closet (toilet) for railroad cars

Latimer's innovative spirit and determination to seize every opportunity led him to work alongside giants like Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. His contributions helped bring electric light to homes across America and beyond.

At Flat Rock Archive, we're inspired by Latimer's legacy of innovation and perseverance. Let's honor his memory by embracing our own opportunities, however small, to create a brighter future for all.

"My race needs no special defense, for the past history of them in this country proves them to be equal of any people anywhere. All they need is an equal chance in the battle of life." - Robert Smalls.

Black History Month Hero: Robert Smalls

Today, we honor Robert Smalls (1839-1915), a true American hero and trailblazer. Born into slavery, Smalls became the First African-American U.S. Navy Ship Captain during the Civil War.

His incredible journey:
β€’ Escaped slavery by commandeering a Confederate ship
β€’ Served in the Union Navy with distinction
β€’ Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives & served five terms
β€’ Fought tirelessly for equal rights and education

Smalls' courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice inspire us today. His life reminds us that we can overcome any obstacle with determination and opportunity.

This Black History Month, let's celebrate Robert Smalls and his enduring legacy of breaking barriers and fighting for equality.

πŸ–€ Black History Month Spotlight: Barbara Jordan πŸ–€
The Flat Rock Archive, Inc. celebrates a champion of integrity in public service.

"We call ourselves public servants, but I'll tell you this: we as public servants must set an example for the rest of the nation. It is hypocritical for the public official to admonish and exhort the people to uphold the common good."

Barbara Jordan: A Legacy of Leadership
*First African American woman elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction

*First Southern Black woman in the U.S. House of Representatives

*Renowned for her powerful defense of the Constitution during the Watergate hearings

Jordan's words echo through time, reminding us that true leadership means embodying the values we preach. At The Flat Rock Archive, Inc., we preserve stories of local leaders who, like Jordan, set examples of service and integrity for their communities.

Why This Matters to Flat Rock
Our mission is to document the rich history of African American life in Flat Rock. Jordan's call for accountable leadership resonates with the legacy of service we've uncovered in our own backyard – from community organizers to elected officials who upheld the common good.

Visit The Flat Rock Archive, Inc. to explore how Jordan's spirit of public service is reflected in our community's own history!
