Sainte Marie among the Iroquois

Sainte Marie among the Iroquois This page is from the dedicated past volunteers of Ste Marie During the summer months, we have costumed interpreters on site performing daily activities.

Ste Marie Living History Site tells the story of a small band of French Jesuit missionaries who established an embassy to the Haudenosaunee in the wilderness at the edge of Lac deGannentha (Onondaga Lake), 1656-1658. This page is a service of the past dedicated volunteers

The Skano center is open, hope all is well. It is the important history of the Iroquois in their words, which it should always be. Although it is not the same mission as previous generation, this is the work of OHA and the county. No volunteers, no mission no history of the life at that cross road of time. It would be great if we could all work it together so that the next generations win. Two Rows with respect, friendship and peace.

Ok it has been 3 years and nothing has really been happening. We the volunteers are excited to see a move to make it the Skano Center. Although I keep wondering why it has been taking 3 years to make this happen. Native culture is an important in bring understanding to not just cultural diversity but understanding of what is happening in our environment.. A place to hear the truth.

Hello Friends,
Since the take over of Ste. Marie, much has been in the planning. We the old volunteers had written a new business plan and have kept in touch. Alas nothing came of the new plan. Onondaga Historical Association has made plans to go another way. These plans apparently will be the last in the destruction of Ste Marie among the Iroquois. A new name, class rooms, restaurant and redesign of the out buildings (dreams of grandeur) . More information is found in the Post Standard.
This will not be the first or the last that the county takes our tax money and as some in the county gov't like to say "we are the county and we can do what we want"
As a past volunteer I know we can say we tried to do our best for the community because others refused too. It is a great lose to the volunteers, history and the next generation.
We will miss the many hundreds of volunteers, the teachers, the kids and the little piece of history that was left in Onondaga county.

Museum has opened July 1st. Only exhibits up are those that where to large to put in archives. So the fishing hut is up but with out the bark, the offices they moved the Ste Marie volunteers into is one big mess. Everything was thrown in the rooms. The lawn was cut gardens of course not tended. After the photos taken and in preparation for the opening. The county parks has put on employee to welcome visitors so already they doubled the cost to the county. I hope she does bathrooms and windows
