In this scene from an ancient Greek tragedy, Orestes avenges his father by murdering his own mother. Even before her body hits the ground, the mythological spirits of vengeance known as the Furies have overwhelmed the guilty son. By pitting Orestes’ n**e body against the hideous trio swarming around him, William-Adolphe Bouguereau set the bar for late 19th-century academic painters. His use of classical figures to animate strikingly dramatic scenes won him both commercial success and critical recognition as the grand master of the French art establishment.

Orestes Pursued By The Furies (1862). By William Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905). Oil on canvas, 227 cm x 278 cm.

The story of John the Baptist is told in the Gospels. John was the cousin of Jesus, and his calling was to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. He lived in the wilderness of Judea between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, "his raiment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey." He baptised Jesus in the Jordan, and was eventually killed by Herod Antipas when he called upon the king to reform his evil ways. John was frequently shown in Christian art, identifiable by his bowl, reed cross, camel's skin and lamb. The most popular scene prior to the Counter-Reformation was of John's baptism of Jesus, or else the infant Baptist together with the infant Jesus and Mary his mother, frequently supplemented by the Baptist's own mother St Elizabeth. John alone in the desert was less popular, but not unknown. For the young Caravaggio, John was invariably a boy or youth alone in the wilderness. This image was based on the statement in the Gospel of Luke that "the child grew and was strengthened in spirit, and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel." These works allowed a religious treatment of the partly clothed youths he liked to paint at this period.[1]

The painting titled Hercules Wrestling with Death for the Body of Alcestis is an oil-on-canvas masterpiece created by the British Academic artist Frederic Leighton between 1869 and 1871. The artwork depicts a dramatic climax from the ancient Greek tragedy Alcestis by Euripides, capturing a fierce supernatural conflict driven by devotion and heroism. According to the myth, King Admetus was granted a favor by Apollo allowing him to avoid an early death on the condition that someone volunteered to die in his place. While his aging parents refused, his deeply devoted wife, Queen Alcestis, agreed to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her husband. Moved by her immense love and devotion, the hero Hercules steps forward to intervene on behalf of the grieving household. He physically wrestles with Thanatos, the personification of Death, in a desperate bid to rescue the queen's soul and restore her back to life.

Leighton splits the composition into distinct narrative zones that emphasize the emotional and physical weight of the myth. On the right side of the canvas, the scene erupts with raw muscular power as a n**e Hercules drives his weight into a dark, winged, and shrouded Thanatos. The paw from Hercules' iconic Nemean lion skin rests directly beside the central bier, serving as a symbolic detail that foreshadows his eventual victory over mortality. In stark contrast to this violent struggle happening over her feet, Queen Alcestis lies peacefully in the center of the painting, draped in pure white linens. Behind her bed, an anguished King Admetus cradles his old father in deep grief, anchoring the emotional stakes of the scene. The left side of the composition features a group of beautifully draped female mourners who turn away in profound sorrow and terror, completely unable to watch the terrifying clash between the hero and the entity of Death. Today, this imposing mythological piece resides in the permanent collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum museum in Hartford, Connecticut.
