Awards night at Lebanon (N.H.) High School! At this year's ceremony, held Monday, June 1 at the Lebanon Opera House, seniors who've taken part in Lebanon High's 'Take Flight' plane-building program received certificates from the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire and signed by N.H. Gov. Kelly Ayotte. Presenting the certificates was Ray Chadwick, president of the museum's board of directors, with Executive Director Jeff Rapsis at the podium doing his best not to mispronounce the students' names: Anna "Charlie" Hayward, Dylan Moore, Solan O'Connor, James Strout, and Yiting Tian. The statewide program, which also includes plane-building projects in Manchester and Farmington, is a partnership between the schools, the museum, and Texas-based non-profit Tango Flight.

Wanted: A high school ready to take hands-on STEM learning to new heights! The Aviation Museum of New Hampshire is searching for the next school to start a student plane-building program. To review the Request for Proposals and apply, follow the link in the comments below.

Begun in 2019 in partnership with the Manchester (N.H.) School of Technology, the program gives young people the opportunity to build a real flyable airplane. Working alongside volunteer mentors, students assemble a two-seat all-metal aircraft as part of a credit-earning course. The completed airplane is then sold on the open market, with proceeds used to pay for the school's next aircraft build.

Following the success of the program in Manchester, the non-profit Aviation Museum established similar programs at Lebanon (N.H.) High School in 2024 and Farmington (N.H.) High School in 2025. Under the program, about 50 students are currently building aircraft as part of their high school classwork.

The museum is now seeking a fourth district ready to add "Airplane-Building" to its course line-up for the 2027-28 school year. The plane-build program is open to any educational institution enrolling students of high school age, including public, private, charter, and parochial schools.

"We're looking for a school ready to embrace this innovative partnership, with its potential to change students' lives," said Jeff Rapsis, executive director of the Aviation Museum of N.H.

The plane-building program is open to schools located anywhere in New Hampshire, or in Massachusetts in Essex or Middlesex counties. The program is offered at no direct cost to local taxpayers. The Aviation Museum of N.H. will commit to raising start-up funds of $320,000 needed to launch the plane-building program, after which it will be self-funding.

The Aviation Museum will also supply a team of trained adult mentors with backgrounds in the aviation or aerospace industries to work alongside the students.

"Our volunteers often bring decades of experience to the workshop, and form a crucial part of the plane-building program," Rapsis said.

A partner in the venture is Tango Flight, Inc., a Texas-based educational non-profit specializing in student plane-build programs. Tango Flight provides accredited curriculum to support the program, plus carries liability insurance covering the program and the aircraft itself.

The Aviation Museum, a non-profit 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization based in the 1937 Art Deco passenger terminal at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, is dedicated to preserving the Granite State's rich aviation past, and also inspiring today's students to become the aviation pioneers of tomorrow. Thank you to N.H. Gov. Kelly Ayotte! Ever since the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire started our student plane-building program in partnership with TangoFlight, we've arranged for all graduating seniors each year to receive certificates signed by the Governor of New Hampshire: for several years the signature was that of Gov. Chris Sununu, and more recently Gov. Ayotte. This year's set of certificates, newly signed by Gov. Ayotte, are set to be distributed to 12 young people who've spent a significant part of their high school education building an aircraft. To the students at Farmington High School, Lebanon High School, and the Manchester School of Technology, we congratulate you on participating in what we hope was a life-changing experience. And to Gov. Ayotte: thank you for continuing the tradition of recognizing the achievement of these young people, who will help maintain the state's leadership in the aviation and aerospace economy.

Year Two in the Books! The 'Take Flight' student plane-building program at Lebanon (N.H.) High School marked the end of its second year with a Breakfast Open House organized by the school on Thursday, May 28. Students, parents, faculty, volunteer mentors, administration, and at least one dog attended.

The program, a partnership between the school, the non-profit Aviation Museum of New Hampshire, and TangoFlight, began in September 2024 with students and mentors beginning assembly of a two-seat Van's Aircraft RV-12iS recreational airplane.

After two school years, the first plane is nearing completion, with all major components built and ready to be fitted together. Along the way, students have learned the basic physics of flight as well as had hands-on experience in workshop environment.

Expectations are that the first plane will be completed sometime in the next school year, when it will be brought to Lebanon Airport for final assembly and testing prior to certification. Meanwhile, students have already begun the first stages of a second aircraft.

Many thanks to all the individuals, businesses, and foundations that supported this program since the beginning. Also, thanks to our partner Tango Flight for essential support and guidance.

Special recognition at the year-end breakfast was made with presentation of the now-annual "Cleco" awards, named after the temporary fastener used throughout the construction of an RV-12iS. This year's honorees were all juniors: Shaya Kiridena, Charlie Ferland, and Ian Danen. Congratulations!

And while we're at it, congrats to all members of the Lebanon High School Class of 2026, who graduate on Thursday, June 4. Best wishes for a successful future wherever your path may take you!

Author book signing! On Thursday, June 4, longtime stewardess / flight attendant Susan Nolan will give not one but two presentations at the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire recounting laughs and memories from a long career in the skies.

Revisit the golden age of air travel with Nolan, author who served more than four decades as a flight attendant and stewardess, first for Northeast Airlines and then Delta Air Lines. She'll speak will speak about her career and sign copies of her book ‘Take the Blue Line to Wonderland’ on Thursday, June 4 at the Aviation Museum.

In her book, Sue Nolan writes of the airline which pioneered air travel in New England, “Northeast Airlines was a colorful, lovable mess. Created as a plaything for a millionaire’s son, it wasn’t exactly designed for profit, but it was designed for dreams.”

On Thursday, June 4 at the Aviation Museum, Nolan will talk about the process of writing her autobiographical book and what some of her high-flying dreams were as part of the museum’s ‘Exploring Aviation’ lecture series, which is open to the public.

Admission is $10 per person; Aviation Museum members admitted free. Join us at the Aviation Museum of N.H. on Thursday, June 4 at noon in the Vincent A. Devino Classroom for a special midday lecture (limited seating available) and again that evening at 7 p.m. Both lectures will take place at the museum, which is located at 27 Navigator Road, Londonderry.

Nolan began her career with Northeast Airlines at time when getting married, having a child, or reaching the age of 35 was often cause for ejection from the airline industry for stewardesses.

But Nolan weathered years of change, both within the aviation industry and in her own life, serving nearly 40 years with Delta Air Lines after the company acquired Northeast in 1972.

‘Take the Blue Line to Wonderland’ is set against the glamour and grit of the Golden Age of air travel and follows Nolan from a shy Connecticut childhood to the skies as a pioneering flight attendant, union leader, and global traveler.

Through turbulence, reinvention, love, loss, and laughter, she learns that finding your voice isn’t a single moment—it’s a lifetime of choosing forward. Signed copies will be available for purchase for $14.99.

SPECIAL BONUS: at the 7 p.m. talk, the Aviation Museum will unveil a recent acquisition: a genuine 'Seat And A Half' set of passenger seats used on a Northeast Airlines 727 from the late 1960s until 1972, when the carrier merged with Delta Air Lines.

The set of preserved seats was donated to the museum by longtime Delta employee (and Manchester, N.H. native) Steve Caisse. The 'Seat And A Half' was introduced at a time when airfares were set by the federal government, forcing to complete on service; Northeast's move was enough to merit coverage in the New York Times. (See in photos below.)

Join us to hear Sue Nolan’s stories on Thursday, June 4 at noon and again at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 per person; Aviation Museum members admitted free. The Aviation Museum is located at 27 Navigator Road, Londonderry, N.H.

LAST CALL!

Financial aid still available for 'Flights of Discovery' summer camp at the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire

Young people ages 10-17 can fly high with immersive two-week aviation day camp; registration deadline extended to Monday, June 1

LONDONDERRY, N.H.—Are your kids into airplanes and aviation?

Satisfy their emerging curiosity with the Aviation Museum's popular 'Flights of Discovery' summer camp program—named 'Best Summer Day Camp' in 2026 by readers of HippoPress.

Seats are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so register today. Registration deadline has been extended to Monday, June 1.

The camp, based at the Aviation Museum of N.H. at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, offers young people ages 10-17 an in-depth summer camp experience in all aspects of aviation.

Online registration for the 2026 camp is online at aviationmuseumofnh.org. Apply via the 'Summer Camp' link on the home page, or click on the 'Education' tab.

The camp is open to area students interested in exploring all aspects of aviation and aerospace. Financial aid is available to families who qualify. More details and contact info can be found at the museum's website, linked in the comments below.

Tuition is $1,400 for a two-week day camp program. Financial aid and tuition scholarships are available to all students who qualify. Financial aid is awarded on a case-by-case basis; all families are encouraged to apply.

"Our 'Flights of Discovery' summer camp program is designed to be the best experience possible, but no one should be turned away by an inability to pay the full tuition," said Nathaniel MacDonald, education director for the non-profit Aviation Museum of N.H. "I encourage families to ask about financial assistance so that all students can have what may be a life-changing experience."

Several aviation-related field trips included—destinations include the N.H. Air National Guard Base at Portsmouth International Airport at Pease, the American Heritage Museum in Hudson, Mass., and a behind-the-scenes airport tour of a local airfield.

"Our summer camp is designed to stimulate and encourage the natural curiosity that young people have about flight," MacDonald said. "If a young person in your life was following the recent Artemis II moon mission, then this is the camp for them," MacDonald said.

'Flights of Discovery' offers young people three starting dates for two-week day programs. Programs are designed either for middle schoolers (age 10 to 13) or high schoolers (age 14-17).

Start dates for the two programs offered for middle schoolers (age 10 to 13) are Monday, June 22 and Monday, Aug. 3. Middle school students will engage in indoor and outdoor hands-on activities exploring topics ranging from the physics of flight to the arrangement of the solar system.

Start date for the two-week program for high schoolers (ages 14-17) is Monday, July 13. Camp runs each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. High schoolers will explore career possibilities in aviation, which range from piloting to air traffic control and aircraft maintenance to aerospace engineering.

All participants will log time on the Aviation Museum's professional grade Elite Flight Simulator. Field trips may vary from camp to camp.

Most camp activities will take place at the Aviation Museum of N.H., which is located adjacent to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. 'Flights of Discovery' will be run by experienced education professionals and volunteers.

"Derry native Alan Shepard, the first American in space, got his first taste of flight right here at the Manchester airfield," MacDonald said. "With so much excitement and interest in the Artemis II moon mission, we hope our 'Flights of Discovery' summer camp program will inspire the next generation of aerospace pioneers and innovators."

Over Memorial Day weekend, the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire took possession of a special collection of airline industry artifacts that involved a quick trip to Dallas, Texas and then—er, a certain amount of travel in a Penske box truck. The effort was well worth it! We'll make an announcement next week, but for now we hope to arouse curiosity with a few photos from the adventure. Enjoy!

This Memorial Day weekend, the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire will be open our regular hours: Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. (We're closed Mondays, which includes Memorial Day on Monday, May 25.) As Memorial Day 2026 approaches, it's worth noting that the Aviation Museum is located on land that for many years was at the heart of Grenier Air Base, which is now today's Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. From World War II through the Cold War, these grounds hosted thousands of active duty military personnel, many on their way to distant lands in times of conflict—some destined never to return. To learn the stories of those whose service included an assignment at Grenier Air Base, consider visiting the Aviation Museum, where we maintain exhibits detailing the history of the base, of which almost physical trace remains today. Our volunteers would be glad to answer your questions or hear your family's story of military service, whether or not it included time at Grenier. Or consider buying a copy of 'Grenier Air Base: A Beacon on the Home Front,' a book about Grenier and its people that the Aviation Museum published in 2024. (A link to purchase the book is posted in the comments below.) However you celebrate Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, we hope you'll joining us in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
