THIS DAY IN HISTORY: Tens of thousands of people marched on the Pentagon on Oct. 21, 1967, to oppose the Vietnam War. Many would be arrested and some were brought down to Lorton. This included novelist Norman Mailer. His account of the demonstration and his incarceration is featured in his National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize winning, nonfiction novel “Armies of the Night."

Fifty-nine years ago Wednesday, tens of thousands of people joined the two-mile walk across Arlington Memorial Bridge to the headquarters of the Defense Department.

Virginians have an important constitutional amendment to vote on at the polls this fall: Voting Rights Restoration for Felons Upon Release. What are your thoughts on this VA Constitutional Amendment?

During our Voting Matters exhibition in 2024/2025, we had an informal poll asking visitors this very question. The overwhelming response -- people should have their voting rights reinstated after completing their sentences. We will see in November if our visitors and Virginia voters agree.

Virginia has been one of the toughest places for someone convicted of a felony to get their voting rights back. An amendment to the state constitution -- on November's ballot -- would change that.
