Load Bearing brings together a group of artists whose videos examine the body as a structural element within social life. Across these works, feminized bodies appear fragmented, packaged, devoted, sexualized, ritualized, and generative—absorbing pressure, stabilizing fragile systems, and carrying unseen burdens and capabilities. Moving from the intimate scale of gesture and domestic space to collective ritual and maternal lineage, the program traces the ways bodies become sites where social forces accumulate, collide and persist.

This companion group show will run alongside Kim and Svetlana’s two-artist exhibition, Shapes of Imposition, from March 14 thru April 18.

In Kim’s work, crude oil fed into raw canvas spreads and creeps along the cotton fibers over months. The seepage resolves into female figures, hunched and absorbed in elongated moments of modern suspension. These unstable bodies operate as infrastructure, sites through which digitally networked perception, affect, and (mis)information circulate. As the oil wicks and migrates, postures and expressions shift. The overlapping forms bleed into one another in a process of mutual reshaping.

Svetlana’s sculptures act as psychic catches, absorbing the viewer’s lusts, assumptions, and derisions. Domestic ready-made fragments are fused with intimate artifacts of hair, teeth and likeness - then poked, preened, twisted and assembled, embalmed and adorned into dysmorphic female forms. The reanimation of these objects into abject sculptures implicates the traditional feminine, upheld by our consumptive culture. What emerges is not nostalgia, but a myth still operative—quietly structuring how the feminine is consumed and contained.

Both artists use material rumination to explore how external impositions form and deform the body-object. Crude oil and hair act as containers of time, one ecological the other human. Where Kim’s figures behave as porous scaffolding for networked psyches, Svetlana’s sculptures act as violent yet vulnerable containers of interiority. In charged adjacency, their works consider the contemporary feminized body as a site shaped by technological mediation, cultural projection and deeper inheritance.

The Agape Residency supports experienced artists and artist collectives, activists, advocates, and community organizers in the development of participatory, collaborative, and community-attuned, site-based projects.

Conceived in response to the urgency of the current socio-political moment and understanding that we all have roles and responsibilities in responding to injustice. Agape focuses not on reaction but proaction, the development, creation and suggestion of a better future. Agape supports artists whose practices move past critique and correct analysis to generate tangible impact, recognizing that understanding injustice is insufficient without mechanisms for collective agency and change.  Agape aims to model solidarity, even if on the microcosmic scale of its location, supporting artists to envision and create the world we want to see.

In support of this work, Agape residents will have access to a theoretical framework  provided by Transformation Arts Beauty Salons, ongoing monthly study groups with structured readings and discussion that highlight successful practical and historical methodologies as catalysts for meaningful change.
