The FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising provides students, researchers, designers, and the public with resources to examine the roles of historic fashion, accessories, textiles, jewelry, fragrance, and related ephemera in their relationship to so

ciety, history, art, and technology. The collections are sustained by standard museum practices for continual acquisition, preservation, and display. Educational, outreach, and volunteer programs support the scholarly interpretation of the collections.

TJ Walker will be in conversation with author, curator, historian and founder of NOMMO Cultural Strategies Tyree Boyd-Pates at the ASU FIDM Museum in Los Angeles.

This photograph of two Gianni Versace dresses, both from the Museum's collection, was inspired by the following images of Linda Evangelista and Kristen McMenamy shot by Steven Meisel. In the '90s the camaraderie between models was evident in media portrayals with Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, along with relative newcomers Kristen McMenamy and Kate Moss appearing on television and in magazine articles together.

Before I began photographing objects that would be featured in our current exhibition, Obsessed: Fashion and Nostalgia in the '90s, I immersed myself in the fashion photography of the time period, as seen in this collage of 90s editorials and advertisements. The look and feel of that photography guided the choice of background color--a light blue--and provided visual references for our photographer Paul Yem, who added visible shadow lines to create depth and interest. The goal was to show the object in as much detail as possible while expressing the mood of the exhibition.

This glossy, patent leather jacket and skirt by Azzedine Alaïa from 1991 features a multi-color brush stroke pattern.

Alaïa studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Tunisia and worked with Thierry Mugler in Paris before launching his own namesake line in 1981. From the beginning, Alaïa worked with leather and other fine materials cut in body-conscious styles meant to accentuate and empower feminine curves.

He also loved vintage fashion and incorporated many historic references into his contemporary designs. For example, the back of this tight skirt showcases a lace-up effect and seaming similar to 1930s corsetry.

Sui's recent book "The Nineties x Anna Sui" will be available for purchase. Come for the conversation, stay for the book signing!

This event is part of the public programming for our current exhibition, Obsessed: Fashion and Nostalgia in the ‘90s, open now through June 27. The gallery will be open late for this event.
