We’ve just received this from Victor, and it reaffirms what has long been evident in his work: he is a truly exceptional artist and a singular mind.
One of the most compelling aspects of great surrealism is its reliance on symbology, iconography, and an expansive imaginative capacity—qualities
that are increasingly rare today. Victor possesses these in abundance. And he is quite a poet. At times it feels like his mind is truly unleashed.

We regard him as both a technical master and a conceptual genius, a combination that is essential to achieving work of this caliber. It is perhaps for
this very reason that so few artists successfully operate within the surrealist tradition today. Many demonstrate extraordinary technical ability but lack
the imaginative depth to transcend craftsmanship; others possess powerful conceptual vision but lack the technical discipline to fully realize it.
Victor is distinguished by the fact that he commands both. Which makes him relatively free of limitation with regard to his paintings.

We have works from Victor dating back nearly 25 years, from the period when we first discovered him. Even then, his conceptual intelligence was
unmistakable, though he was still refining his technical ex*****on. Today, he has reached a level of maturity where both elements—conceptual depth
and technical mastery—are fully and confidently realized. The reaction his work elicits when viewed in the gallery is remarkable. There is an immediate
sense of fascination and sustained engagement—an unmistakable response to work that operates on both an intellectual and visceral level.

From Victor Huerta Batista - January 8th, 2025
The Shoe of Man

I believe that the work of every artist who is authentic and transcendent within the history of art shares a fundamental characteristic: the work is inseparable
from lived experience. Each carries a story that must be told. In my own practice, this reflection of personal life is present throughout much of my work.

I was born and have lived in a country that constantly forced my dreams to exist elsewhere in order to be realized. My story mirrors that of my hometown, Camagüey—
a place defined by longing, re

We consider Huerta to be both a technical master, and a conceptual genius. How many contemporary artists working today, have that combination of qualities?

Una hermosa pintura nueva de Victor Huerta Batista.
Impresionante surrealismo tropical, por uno de los artistas surrealistas más talentosos, vivo y trabajando hoy en día, en cualquier parte del mundo.

Recent works by Eduardo Santana. Acrylic, graphite, collage and watercolor on paper.

Eduardo Santana is a teacher of fine arts at one of the Universities in Havana. He is a highly skilled artist, with a substantial degree of conceptual brilliance. Surrealism is a challenging genre for any artist. Some of the Cuban artists tackle this challenge as well as artists anywhere in the world today. Where do these influences come from?

Santana has participated in nearly 50 group shows, several solo shows, and has work in collections in Spain, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway, the US, Canada, France, the UK, Italy, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Argentina, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Throughout Latin America, the European art movement Surrealism was enthusiastically accepted by certain segments of the artistic community. Many artists were drawn to Surrealism’s emphasis on the irrational, the emotional, the personal, and the subconscious. In general, European Surrrealist artists examined “primitive” art and folk art to discover an instinctive spirit, a reference point that was relevant to Latin American artists searching to establish a distinctive art based on their own multifaceted traditions. Highly influential in the implantation of Surrealism in Latin America was the founder of the movement, the French poet-philosopher Andre Breton. In 1934 the Chilean artist Roberto Matta, who had worked in France for Le Corbusier, abandoned his training in architecture, so that he could pursue art in Paris, where he became associated with Breton and the Surrealists. His early paintings placed nonrecognizable biomorphic forms onto a receding spatial grid. In his later works scratched and drawn figures occasionally take on the appearance of menacing Latin American generals, operating as one of the few references to his homeland in his otherwise generalized time and space. Surrealism also allowed many Latin American artists to explore their individual ancestry.

Cuban artist Wifredo Lam joined Breton and his Surrealist circle in 1940, after they went into self-exile in Martinique. When Lam returned to Cuba, he began to examine his own African heritage: his mother was Afro-Cuban, and his godmother was a Santeria priestess. He explored this heritage in his work, depicting tropical fantasies filled with forms suggestive of African sculpture, masks, and figures. This emphasis on African forms also related to his contact with the Surrealists, who saw all “primitive” (narrowly meaning non-Western) artistic expression as connected with humanity’s common subconscious forms and experiences. Lam was particularly influenced by his contact with Picasso, who early in the century had used African sculpture as an important inspiration for Cubism.

Some additional works on paper, that are wonderful examples of Raul Enmanuel's command of the paper medium.

These works are 30" x 22" (76cm. x 56cm.) and are only $975! They are acrylic, charcoal, gesso paste and materials (typically crushed marble or wood particles) on 140lb. Arches Aquarelle paper.

His texture, compositions, and technical mastery continue to astound. This is recent work, and though his symbology tends toward the abstract, he has hinted that these paintings are representative of feminine, divine beings of a benevolent, and supportive nature. Much of his work employs the palm jungle as a basis for the profound symbology of the work. There is great power in these paintings, and the unique forms, symbols, and figures in the end, compose these lovely and highly distinctive abstract, tropical landscapes, that he has become known for. Though there are points of reference to be found in these works, the work has become entirely his own.

Though there are not many contemporary artists we can say this about, we consider Enmanuel to be both a technical master, and a conceptual genius. A difficult pair of qualities to find in a contemporary artist, these days.

A happy new collector with his painting, by the Mexican Master Guillermo Ceniceros.

He acquired it from us, we had it framed for him, brought it to his home, and hung it. He is thrilled with the work.
