260-hectare El Dorado Park is the largest park in Long Beach. It was purchased by the city from the Bixby Family and opened in 1964. Not just a park, it also exists to protect nearby neighborhoods from the dangers of the potentially flooding San Gabriel River and the 605 Freeway.

Palo Verde (named after Palo Verde Avenue) was subdivided between 1951 and '56 and is located around the confluence of Boulton Creek and Los Cerritos Channel - Palo Verde Lateral. It was annexed by Long Beach between 1952 and ’59. Palo Verde Square, a strip mall, opened in 1956.

Numerous Filipinos moved to Long Beach in the 1930s to work in canneries. One of the oldest Pinoy legacy businesses in Little Manila is Gemmae Bake Shop (1979). Filipinos are by far the largest Asian demographic in Long Beach but Little Manila still lacks official recognition.

Ross W. Cortese began developing Lakewood Rancho Estates in 1953. The neighborhood was built-out with California ranch homes designed by Cliff May and Chris Choate. Its name was shortened to Rancho Estates after it was annexed by Long Beach and thus ceased to be part of Lakewood.
