Wilhelm Neusser’s new paintings are nod to previous Realist painters who depicted agricultural labor, such as Courbet, Millet, Van Gogh, Homer. The autumn harvest of the crimson-colored berries, taking place from Mid-September early November, is an agricultural spectacle along the shore of Massachusetts. Neusser has explored the subject since 2018 and established a substantial body of around the harvest, merging observations of regional agriculture with expressions of inner landscape.

On view through June 20th.

The penultimate weekend to experience “Bogged Down” by Wilhelm Neusser. Across the exhibition, familiar landscapes transform into scenes that feel quietly surreal.

Get to know artists and in this week’s online feature (linked in bio). Currently on view in Cover Story, the artists’ practices explore the symbolism and dialogue that emerge through depictions of everyday objects and places. Once the exhibition was installed we noticed a similarity between the artists that extends beyond the canvas: both artists are educators living and working in the Northeast (USA). Our Assistant Director, Michaela Dehning, sat down with the painters to dive deeper into their practices. Through May 30 at Abigail Ogilvy Gallery Los Angeles: “Bogged Down,” a solo exhibition by Wilhelm Neusser, and “Cover Story,” featuring works by Teddy Benfield and Tara Lewis.

Seen together on site, the exhibitions create an unexpected dialogue through shared themes of place, symbolism, and the everyday. All three artists are educators living and working in the Northeastern U.S., using familiar subjects and landscapes to explore larger ideas around memory, meaning, and perception.

Abigail Ogilvy Gallery is thrilled to return to Future Fair next week, presenting artworks by Elizabeth King Stanton for the second time at the fair. Elizabeth Stanton is a painter living with her husband and daughter in New Bedford, MA. She studied painting at Rhode Island School of Design (MFA 2017) and Boston University (BFA 2011). Her paintings are visually delicate, yet dense. Often filled to the brim with pattern, the thin surfaces are touched many times, until every dab of paint is held taut in its place. The vibrant colors and playful imagery pay homage to a typical day of toddlerhood.
