A letter from the curator, artist Anne Faith Nicholls
After five tremendously sucessful of owning, growing, and operating CURIO Studio & Collection, I have recently closed my doors at my Venice Beach location to move forward and focus completely on some incredible new opportunities. I am proud to announce my partnership with the venerable Martin Lawrence Galleries, who will now be my exclusive sales agents, nationwide. Martin Lawrence Galleries is best known for representing the work of Picasso, Dali, Basquiat and other masters, and now I will join the ranks of their impressive roster! In this past year, Martin Lawrence Galleries have already hosted two sold-out exhibitions of my paintings at both their San Francisco, and Las Vegas locations. This July and August, I’m excited to be showing new work in their Las Vegas and La Jolla locations! Though I wish I had the time to continue to showcase other talented artists as we did at CURIO, now I am excited to have the resources and team to make it possible to completely focus on my own work.
I opened CURIO 5 years ago in the middle of the recession in a dilapidated building in the heart of Venice Beach. With blood, sweat, tears, and the help of my encouraging family, friends, and especially my husband, filmmaker/artist Jacob Arden McClure, we built up a small, blank space into an inspirational, creative hub. I am proud to say that CURIO was right there in the middle of it all as the Venice Arts District was revitalized. As CURIO grew, others came…. We watched Google move in, and the witnessed the re-birth of cool on Abbott Kinney Blvd, as the neighborhood turned into one of the hippest, most art-centric places on earth! And the art…oh, the art! Together, with talented emerging artists & curators, CURIO put on shows, happenings, classes, and art events that inspired others and kickstarted art careers! I am so proud of all the shows we did and all the collectors we connected artists with, and can’t wait to see what’s next for them.
From CURIO, I learned so much. Most of all, that if you work hard (really hard) and relentlessly pursue your passion with purpose, good things WILL come to you! Big things often have small beginnings, and there is no formula to success, especially in the art world, besides putting yourself out there, and continuing to strive to put your best work forward! I’ve gotten this far by staying true to myself and my style, getting creative during lean times, not compromising my values or taste, and working with the best of the best.
Now, moving forward, I am so excited to be working with the incredible team at Martin Lawrence Galleries, and together, we have some BIG things coming up in the next few years. I will continue to be an active part of the Los Angeles Art Scene, and support my comrades-in-art! Jacob and I will continue to maintain CURIO’s online presence, and will be traveling-for-art way more now as we work on projects around the world this next year! I hope to see you all soon at one of my many exhibitions coming to a city near you!
Long live The Art Life!
Sincerely,
Anne Faith Nicholls
