ASCO: WITHOUT PERMISSION is a genre-defying film that profiles the extraordinary, Los Angeles based, Chicano art group of the 70’s-80’s, ASCO, who merged activism and art as they challenged representation in the art world, Hollywood and the news media. Unrecognized in their time, they are now being considered amongst the most important artists of the 20th century. Utilizing a wholly original approach to filmmaking where nonfiction and fiction are interconnected through collaborative film works made with the next generation of Latinx artists, “Without Permission” reimagines what is possible today in cinema and art while celebrating an iconoclastic group that was far ahead of its time. From executive producers, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.

Thursday, May 28th screening at 7:30pm will be MC’d by Norma Fabian Newton and followed by a Q&A with Director Travis Gutiérrez Senger, Moderator Pilar Tompkins Rivas and Asco members Harry Gamboa Jr. and Patssi Valdez.
The Friday, May 29th screening at 7:30pm will be co-hosted by Jeffrey Deitch and followed by a Q&A with Director Travis Gutiérrez Senger and Rita Gonzalez (Head of Contemporary art at LACMA).

Fred Korematsu (1919–2005) was an American civil rights activist who defied the U.S. government’s forced internment of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. He is important for challenging the constitutionality of this incarceration, resulting in the landmark Supreme Court case Korematsu v. United States, and for his later work fighting for civil rights.

* In 1942, at age 23, Korematsu refused to obey Executive Order 9066, which required people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast to move into detention camps.
* Korematsu v. United States (1944): He took his case to the Supreme Court, arguing the internment was unconstitutional. The Court ruled against him, 6-3, stating that the incarceration was justified by “military necessity”.
* Overturning Conviction: In 1983, decades later, legal researchers found evidence that the government withheld information indicating Japanese Americans were not a security threat. With this, his conviction was overturned by a federal court, a major victory for civil liberties.
* Legacy and Awards: He continued to advocate against racial profiling, especially after 9/11. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 by President Bill Clinton.
* Fred Korematsu Day: California declared January 30th (his birthday) as “[Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution]” to honor his fight for justice.
His case remains a critical study on the danger of prioritizing fear over constitutional rights during times of war.

Eastern Projects Gallery is pleased to present WISH LIST, a new solo exhibition by
Gómez Bueno and the artist’s third show with the gallery. The exhibition opens with a
public reception on May 2 from 5:00-8:00 PM in Los Angeles.

WISH LIST unfolds as a vibrant exploration of identity and cultural symbolism, unified
through the visual language of pop art and rendered entirely in oil paint. Across three
distinct bodies of work, Gómez Bueno transforms familiar imagery into something both
intimate and confrontational, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship to objects,
icons, and systems of value.
At its core, the exhibition reflects on the act of collecting and the meaning we assign to
objects. Collecting holds deep significance for individuals and society alike, allowing us
to preserve and cherish our past. Whether it’s stamps, coins, vintage photographs, or
historical artifacts, these collections act as tangible links to our cultural heritage. By
safeguarding these objects, we ensure that the stories they carry endure, offering future
generations insight into identity and history. As Rodolfo Fuentespila notes, “The value of
a collection lies in the experience it brings, the knowledge it imparts, and the joy it
inspires.”
The first series presents realistic depictions of everyday objects including shoes,
jackets, sunglasses, surfboards, speakers, decorative figurines, and masks, each
painted with meticulous attention to surface and texture. Elevated through scale and
detail, these items become icons of personal longing and material aspiration, prompting
reflection on possession, taste, and the allure of the ordinary.
In contrast, the second body of work shifts focus to portraiture,
